Shadowrun update!

The core data files will reflect the core rulebook contents, plus there *may* be a few other bits thrown in. The major supplements are planned to be released reasonably soon after the core data files as optional add-ons.

I hope it will be easy to implement house rules.

Examples:
Character advancement with BP and not with Karma
Different costs for Adept Powers

Your first request is a fundamental change to how character advancement functions, and I'll keep it in mind as something to allow down the road (especially if we get more requests for it). You may also be able to get it to work to some extent by switching your character between creation mode and advancement mode - stay in advancement mode most of the time, and when you have more BP to spend, switch to creation mode, increase the character's starting BP and spend it as if you were still creating the character, then switch back to advancement mode.

You will be able to change all of the Karma and BP costs that Hero Lab is using, but the problem is that increasing an attribute would still have a cost that is a multiple of the attribute value, and I'm guessing that your system has a fixed cost per advance, so just changing all the Karma numbers to be identical to the BP numbers wouldn't help.

Your second request will be something you can do easily - there is an integrated editor within Hero Lab. Using that, you can copy one of the existing adept powers, change the cost for it, then set it as a replacement for the original version. Once you've set up all your replacements, they'll all be in a single file - you can email that file to the rest of your gaming group, so that their copies of Hero Lab have those same price changes.

Is there a reason to change out of the creation mode?
(Btw.: If I remember correctly, Karma Generation will not be in the initial release, correct?)

Yes, Character advancement would be with the same (linear) cost as in Character generation.

Great! That sounds like I could create an (at least partial) data set for not supported races. (ie. Runners Companion)

I'll quote FrankTrollman for the reasons to use BP for advancement.
FrankTrollmann said:
It is undeniable fact that the Karma system of advancement fits rather poorly with the Build Point system of character creation. Some things that you might buy with BP cost more BP than they would with Karma (ex.: buying your Strength to 2 would cost 10 BP or only 6 Karma), while others cost tremendously more Karma than BP (example: buying a skill from 5 to 6 would cost 4 BP or 12 Karma). That leads to very real and very large discrepancies between characters who min/max their initial BP and those who don't. And frankly, that's bad. We want people to make organic looking characters rather than worrying over much about BP/Karma efficiency or any of that crap.

There are two obvious ways to deal with that. You could either make people create their characters with Karma in the first place, or you could make people advance their characters by gaining additional BP. The former has optional rules which are either available from Serbitar or in the upcoming Runner's Companion, and you are welcome to use them from either source. Personally, I prefer to use the smaller and more linear numbers of BP Advancement, so that's what gets written up here...

Gear bought while in creation mode will cost BP, and will not subtract from your cash. It'll also complain if you purchase something at higher than availability 12 or rating 6.

You're correct, the Runner's Companion isn't going to be finished in time for the initial release.

We're coming down to the wire with just a month til Gen Con. Any last minute info you can give us? And will it be available for download when it releases at the Con or do we have to be at the show to get our hands on it ASAP?

We're doing everything possible to make sure Shadowrun is ready in time for GenCon, and it currently looks like we'll have it done in time. Assuming everything stays on track, we'll be releasing Shadowrun the same way we've done other data file releases in the past for GenCon. The data files will go live through the website immediately before GenCon, resulting in an essentially simultaneous availability both at the show and online. Since this is a new game system, there will also be a minor new update for Hero Lab itself (V3.7b) released at the same time.

I second Crypto on that one. I need the SR license and data sets. My group is eager to play it but with 7+ players I am going to need the software to manage all the prime runners and their character sheets. As the GM I already mandated that all their pathfinder / D&D 4e / WoD characters be in my HL so I can ensure they are not making illegal modifications to sheets.

GenCon is the middle of August. It's the legacy of the original big convention put on by TSR, then WoTC, and now is it's own company. It and Origins tend to be when new gaming products come out from US gaming companies.

Gen Con starts Aug 4 and runs through Aug 7. It should be a good one this year, the hall is bigger, more events, more people have already registered to go.

And me desperately wishing I could go since I'm off...but can't afford it :( oh well...maybe next year I'll go again.

It is down to 1 week and about 10 hours till Gencon thursday.

Do you think we'll know by then if they'll actually release Shadowrun at Gencon?

I'd hope I can buy it online by then as well, as I can't afford Gencon this year.

Any news guys?
