I am currently updating the LoTR data files and have done I believe
an excelent job (adding the BoHD cards, making the duplicate tags
work, etc.) but I can not find out how to add languages other then
english of the life of me, I personally love this program and use it
constantly so any help is much appreciated, if you can email me at
mongus12@aol.com. TY for any info available.

OK, you've lost me, and that's not a good thing. What are the
BoHD cards?

Do you mean actual language support, or just adding the tags for
new languages?
For new tags, consult the CV-Files document for the two-letter
abbreviations. Each card has a "languages" attribute. Currently, they are
all set to "en" for English". This would need to be changed, and it would
be easier if I did it - I have the card data and an export program to do it
all en masse.
For actual language support, I'm not sure CV does that
yet. Ed? Rob? Colen? Bueller?

D'oh!
That's out awfully early, at least compared to Tow Towers. OK,
new task, moved to top of list.

Authoring Kit Fundamentals, the HTML documentation downlaoded with the kit.

V1.0 supports:

English en
Spanish sp
French fr
German ge
Italian it
Portugese pr
Japanese jp
Chinese ch
Hungarian hg
Polish pl

V1.1 should have a few more, like Russian.

What exactly does this let you do? Just keep track of any cards you might have in other languages, or is there something more?

As I understand it at the moment, that's all there is. I'm sure
someone will correct me if I'm wrong... :)

As far as I know thats all it lets you do, but I am somewhat of a
perfectionist (all cards must have the lore correct, amoung other
things) but when I would enter this for example I put "en+sp" and
loaded CV this error occured:
Artwork element specifies language not assigned to card.

Can you please shed some light on what I may be doing wrong, is there
a tag I need to add to the lotr.def file for this and if so what
should the tag look like?

In general, the docs (see below) are very good. Rob's writing
gets a little dense at times (a side-effect of having his mind as deep into
the code as he has to to get it all working) in the way it's all phrased,
but the answers are all there. It may just take a little work to figure
them out. Not to say that you shouldn't post questions here, but I've
found that it's at least worth a quick look through the docs before I ask a
question that's the equivalent of "What's the number for 911?"

According to the docs (look in the "docs" directory, under
whatever directory Card Vault is installed in, at file "CV-Files.RTF" or
"CV-Files.PDF") you would want to add the following:

languages="en+sp" deflang="en"

...to the "game" tag group at the top of the "lotr.def"
file. Just keep in mind that when the "official" files get released (this
may take a couple of days, as a HDD failure has forced me to re-install a
number of things - aside from the BoHD spoiler that I need to rip from its
PDF and set up) anything you do will be overwritten. If you have any
special requests/suggestions/etc you might send them to me privately
(turing2@rcn.com) to prevent cluttering up the general list with too much
technical stuff.

Note to MarkP - You might find this helpful with the next LotR update if
you weren't already aware of this "shortcut". :-)

Languages are controlled at three levels: the game system, the card, and
the artwork instance. Here's how to do it.

1. You first need to add all the appropriate language entries to the
definition file. There is a "languages=" attribute in the definition file
that needs the new languages added (e.g. "en+sp+fr").

2. Normally, you would need to add the set of languages to each card as
well. This would be done via the the "languages=" attribute for each card.
However, in the case of LotR, all of the cards are printed the same way in
all of the languages (to the best of my knowledge, but I may be wrong). CV
defaults to having all cards belong to all languages defined for the game,
so you should make sure that there is NO "languages=" attribute on ANY card.

3. Lastly, you need to specify the set of languages for each separate piece
of artwork. This would be done via the "languages=" attribute on each
"artwork" element for each card. However, as with the cards above, CV
defaults to having each piece of artwork appear in every language. So, with
LotR, I think you can achieve your goal by making sure all "languages="
attributes are NOT present for all artwork elements.

If my assumption is correct about all LotR cards being printed in all the
same languages, CV's default behaviors will give you what you want
automatically (that's why we did it that way <G>). So just delete all the
language stuff from all card/artwork elements and add them all to the
definition file. You ought to be good to go at that point. :-)

HOWEVER!! Realize that any changes you make to the files will NOT
necessarily be compatible with any new updates from MarkP. So make sure to
coordinate with Mark and/or plan on having to potentially revise your
inventory data once Mark releases new data files.

Hope this helps,
Rob

Language support was JUST added in Build #29, which was released to the
Beta team on Friday (hence Mark's uncertainty on the matter). CV will now
allow authors to include translation data for cards (name, description,
flavor text). Users can view the translation text for each card (subject to
the data included by the authors). Users can also switch CV to show each
card in the selected default language if desired.

Please Note! Just because CV can do this now does NOT mean foreign language
data will be appearing immediatley (or even at all in some cases). Culling
together all the foreign language information for cards is a substantial
task and then integrating that into the data files is another big task. The
issues of practicality and access to information will hold sway in this
matter and will definitely vary from one game system to another. If you
have all of the foreign language data for a particular game, please contact
the author of that game and make the data available to the author. It won't
eliminate the work of integrating that data, but it will at least eliminate
the first hurdle (obtaining it). :-)

Thanks, Rob
