How do I make a named item editable?

Senko

Well-known member
There are a number of items e.g. elven chain, dwarven plate etc that I want to be able to modify as people enchant them further (higher bonus, ghost touch etc). The problem is that all these named items don't have the option to edit (add materials, spells, enhancement bonus) and I can't figure out how to enable it via the editor.

Now I could just work my way through all the fields on an exisiting item one by one and hope I hit the "can't edit" tag but that sounds a little risky and I've already tried just reproducing everything on a custom one in the hopes that would bypass the protection (no luck so I think its a tag I need to add rather than remove which means I have no idea where to start looking).

So I'm hoping someone could take pity on a beginner and give me clear instructions on how to make something (elven chain say) editable. That is what tag do I need to remove/add to enable the little hammer and wrench you get with custom items that let you modify them please?

This is on the to-do list, but not currently an option. You can use the editor to make a copy of the specific weapon/armor you're interested in, and modify it there, creating a new magic item.

The Community Player Pack provides these for you already. You can also download the file "PFRPG_ShadowChemosh_SpecificArmor.user" from d20pfsrd repository as its own individual addon if you don't want the whole CPP.

What this does is add a these armors as armor that can be selected when making a custom suit of armor. This allows you to easily make a +1 Elven Chain or +1 Light Fortification Dwarven Plate.

In a related question, I have a character with Enchanted Eelskin and I'd like to get it improved with an additional +1 Armor Bonus, which as far as I can tell should be legal.

In the Editor, it tells me that Enchanted Eelskin is not copyable, and there is no Adjustment to add to the bonus of a particular armor item that I see.

Is there any way to recreate Enchanted Eelskin from components?

What you do is you can do a "New Copy" on Eelskin. Then do a New (Blank) version and copy each setting from the Eelskin to the New Blank version. Once all copied over you can then increase the armor with a +1 bonus.

Shadow, is this the only way to make a changed named magic armor? Or is there a way to enable editing (on a new armor, obviously)? I have the mithral full plate of speed, and my GM sees no reason why that can't be upgraded, but I can't do it in Hero Lab. I created a copy of it in the editor, but I still can't do any editing to the item while in my profile. How would I set it up so that it is editable? Or will I have to go in the editor each time I want to upgrade it and modify the item I made?

ShadowChemosh, thanks so much for the Armor Bonus adjustment in the new update. That's so much easier than having to make a new version in the editor. :D

Pretty much as Mathias says but you could use the editor to make a version of the Speed Plate that you could add special abilities too. If you want to just increase its "Plus" bonus I have a new adjustment out that can do that now called "Equipment, Armor Enhancement". :)

But I can't currently add special abilities like Fortification that still requires using the editor.

Thanks charlieluce! It was actually this very thread that made me think about making an adjustment to increase Armor magic plus.
