Calendar

Has there been any consideration in releasing a Golarion specific calendar module in one of the upcoming updates?

That way you don't have to release the entire module which I understand is complicated and still being worked on but could provide something for those of us who are using HeroLab primarily in a Pathfinder game and who are using the Golarion setting for our games.

Thanks for your consideration.

+50 (or whatever) for custom calendars. I know it's a tough nut to crack, especially if you want to have something with 5 seconds in a minute, 120 minutes in an hour, 26 hours in a day, nine days in a week, three weeks in a month (except for every third month, which has five weeks), 22 weeks in a year, and all of this must be integrated with the movements of four celestial bodies including two moons, an asteroid belt, and a comet.

Okay, that's an extreme example, admittedly, but some people have really strange needs for their campaigns.

In any case, put me down for support of custom calendars and keep up the GREAT work, guys!

Ah man....for some reason I thought this was included in the box. :(

Oh well, +$$$ or whatever - the calendar is where it all starts (my fellow Forgotten Realms' GM's feel me I'm sure), so the sooner we have this feature the betterz.

My players can wait on their version until I have my dates straight! ;)

For those of you recently here to the forums, while it didn't make it on v1.0, the calendar feature IS there and from what we've been told, it seems like largely done. However, various staff members, have indicated that the front end to it is rough and not even close to their standards.

Various descriptions in the past had indicate that the vast majority of requests related to calendars were indeed part of what they had.

So while I'm very eager to get my paws on it, given LWD's history with this product, I'm not stressing about what's going to come out of it. :)

What weogarth said.

Whilst I'm not going to cease asking (until LWD tell me to stop, at least), the existence of this thread and the sheer number of replies to it is the best indicator we have of the priority the calendar tool has for LWD.

We know how flexible it is, since the Gregorian calendar has been successfully built using it, and the Gregorian calendar is (as I've previously said) utterly mental in terms of complexity (it actually puts most fantasy or Sci-Fi calendars to shame).

I do agree with those clamouring for their pet calendars to be implemented (I would suggest the calendar of Harptos for the Forgotten Realms, Golarion's calendar, and the Star Wars calendar, which would cover the most asked for ones), but I can understand if LWD consider that to be time better spent working on the actual calendar tool.

+1 for the calendar tool!

I think release of the calendar tool should be a priority for the same reasons others have mentioned above.

That was a switch to a different calendar, not a change within a single calendar. You'd define both calendars, then pick a date in one and the equivalent date in the other so Realm Works can convert between them. (They've talked about that before.)
With the differing rules for leap years and such, the result will be what we have today: Julian continues to separate from Gregorian.

And yes, the calendar mechanism we have in place handles that cleanly, too. It handles a heck of a lot more insanity, but there are a few really wonky things we didn't think of that need to be added. That's not hard at this point.

The REAL work is the interface. The current interface is just crude and clunky. It needs to be completely reworked, and that will take a healthy amount of time. That's why the calendar mechanism is currently withheld from the released version. We need to make the interface USABLE.

Could I ask a staff member if there is a rough timescale for when the full calendar tool is likely to be available please? Are we talking next release, a month, a year?

I really like realm works but the more I use it the more the calendar's absence is becoming a serious hindrance - right now I keep a separate manual file to 'translate' my realms' calendars into gregorian for record keeping and it's a real pain in the neck (and defeats the reason I bought RW which was to have everything in one place). I am also worried that the more data I add like this, the more trouble I will have converting it once the full calendar is available.

I understand the reasons why it was held back from the initial release but if it's just a question of the interface, would you consider releasing it 'as is', as beta functionality, on the understanding that the interface will later change?

+1 here. A better calendar is the way to go. I still haven't figured out how to enter properly my dates, especially since most of them are in Gregorian, but in the far future (5000). Some of them even start way before the Gregorian calendar (-40 000 BC), which I can't enter. Having a custom calendar, where you could simply type date without being obliged to type a date as 3rd july. Most of the past history of my realm is just made of year, as in history books.

+1 to all this.
Also I wonder if it could be possible to enter less precise dates. By that I mean, if the players only know that a certain thing happened a certain year but not the exact day (or if I just haven't decided the exact date&time yet) I would like to be able to just enter a year, or a year and a month, etc. etc.

+1 from me as well. I've got all kinds of opinions & desires re arbitrary custom calendar creation, but they mesh with many of the others who have written here so I guess I needn't repeat them. The ability to dynamically swap between calendars so that date links can be expressed in terms of multiple different custom calendars from different in-game cultures is glorious and huge. Hurrah in advance --

+1!!!

The calendar is a very important feature to bilud my campaign and therefore I have a question:
Is there an estimation when this feature will become available?
Thanks ahead.

I've been hoping something like this could be added as well. It probably depends on whether the calendar structure allows for some sort of null values. I don't know if it should have its own thread or not, but a big +1 here.

Came to the forums to ask about the calendar, and found this thread. So, +1 for custom calendars. Doesn't that go without saying in a program called Realm Works, though? As complex as it might be, it seems this should be as important as tracking secret organizations or political borders in the types of realms we all like.

However, in skimming this thread, I don't see this question raised or answered. Is the complexity of all this also related to having a timeline generated? Right now, we have the reveal timeline, which is based on real-world dates of game play, as it should be.

However, typical of any realm with a history, there is also the realm's timeline.

At a glance, this might seem simple. Attach a date of birth to a person, and it will show up. However, we also need to consider famous moments within that person's life. If the Dude survived the Battle of Nothing in LY 123, we need a snippet of information on the person that can be revealed to players and then show up in a historical timeline for the realm.

Custom Calendar for me as well. Putting in recurring events and with months of varying lengths.

Possible feature to add would be multiple calendars side by side. For example I wouldn't mind being able to have a seasonal/celestial calendar to mark the movements of planets and mark seasons on top of a normal calendar that might not always coincide with said seasons. Or to have different calendars for different nations/continents/planes/planets.

Definate +1 For the seasonal and celestial calennders! Another cool idea that would be linked to the calender would be tracking celestial bodies for a given world. Something that might tell me when there is an eclipse, the planets are in alignment or what's the current lunar phase (for world shaking events). This could be tracked simply by the user indicating the cycle of such events.

I know LW has had some personnel issues and there are issues with developing the calendar module. I know they're aware of the interest in this functionality based on the number of comments on this thread.

I'd be happy with a calendar module for Golarion that could be updated later even if it's just the days of week, calendar and roll of years; later functionality could be made available through upgrades.

It's hard to put all this information into a campaign world in RW when you can't use any of the functionality associated with timekeeping or calendars because it won't port over when the calendar upgrade is released.

I reiterate that I am aware there are events out of the control of LWD and I know they're trying to release a good product so I don't want this to be construed as taking shots at the company, it's just a long winded version of my two cents.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents. I just purchased Realm Works today. I would have done so a while ago but custom calendar functionality is pretty important. The free campaign software I currently use has this but RW is superior in pretty much all other ways so I decided to make the plunge. Personally, I wouldn't need a calendar down to the second. I just would like days and months, preferably where the days could be tracked and have notes (like weather conditions).

Thanks,

John
