The long-awaited Hero Lab 3.7 update has just been released! Here are some of the cool new features that we've added this release:
  • New Pathfinder data files released, including a new optional supplement package - Ultimate Magic! (Note that Words of Power are not included in the Ultimate Magic content yet - they'l be added as an update to the package sometime this month.)
  • Custom output has been enabled for Pathfinder, the d20 System, both Mutants & Masterminds editions, and Savage Worlds! This allows users to define their own custom output types, which can then generate custom character sheets. See the manual for details.
  • When printing your hero or generating a statblock, you can now choose to output every hero in the portfolio, allowing you to output multiple characters at once.
  • New scrollable tabs allow Hero Lab to look great on smaller screens, for example on the Class tab in Pathfinder.
  • Third-Party Updates allow easier management of updates created by independent authors for Hero Lab game systems.
  • Hero Lab has a new installer, which complies with new program requirements in Windows 7. This means it no longer requires administrator rights to run if installed in certain locations.

And more! Check out the release notes in the Hero Lab 3.7 readme file for more details.

Hero Lab 3.7 is a free update for all previous users of Hero Lab. You can download it from our website at http://www.wolflair.com/ , or through the updates mechanism within Hero Lab.

We'd also like to announce our "Powered by Hero Lab" program today. If you're a publisher or fan who wants to use Hero Lab in conjunction with publishing your own content, you need to check this out! You can read all about "Powered by Hero Lab" here:

I upgraded and everything looks good...

Except my program list now shows Cortex twice! Any idea why and how I can fix it?

Did you have the Cortex game system installed under a different folder than normal? If so, you should be able to just delete the almost-empty cortex folder to get rid of it. (You can access that folder by going to Tools -> Explore Folders -> Program Data folder, then switching to the "data" folder in the Hero Lab explorer window that appears.

If that doesn't help, please email me at colen@wolflair.com so I can investigate this further, as HL3.7 shouldn't be installing new Cortex stuff.

I thought it was weird when I opened Hero Lab earlier tonight that it said it had a Cortex update. So maybe a dupe was created when I chose to download the update after I upgraded to the new HL version.

At any rate, your advice worked and now only one Cortex shows up in the starting menu. And the game still functions, so I'm happy.

Thank you!

Custom Output DTD

See the "Custom Output" section of the Hero Lab user manual for more details on custom output. Users looking to create their own custom output types can find the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game custom output DTD [here].

file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/All%20Users/Application%20Data/Hero%20Lab/Data/pathfinder/customoutput.dtd

This path and file do not exist.

Hmm, it looks like the pathfinder DTD didn't get included in the import file for some reason. I'll correct this for the next release - in the mean time, I've attached the DTD to this post so you can take a look at it.

Great, now for the next step.

C:\Program Files\Hero Lab

But, this does not contain any of the following directory or subdirectories.

\\customoutput\
\\customoutput\sample

I think something got left out as it is on neither of my computers running the uptodate HL.

To help future readers here is the new folder location information from the HL manual about where 3.7 puts its stuff.

By default, Hero Lab keeps its files in three places. They are:
  • Install Folder – Where Hero Lab is installed. By default, this will be something like "C:\Program Files\Hero Lab". You pick this when you install the product.
  • Program Data Folder – Where Hero Lab keeps its data files. This will be something like "C:\ProgramData\Hero Lab" on Windows 7, or "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Hero Lab" on Windows XP/Vista.
  • User Data Folder – This is different for each windows user, and will typically be something like "My Documents\Hero Lab" (note that "My Documents" is a different folder for each windows user).

Pathfinder - d20pfsrd and Pathfinder Pack Setup
3.5 D&D (d20) - Community Server Setup
5E D&D - Community Server Setup

What about custom character sheets for 4th edition ?

Never mind I see that you will be adding it for other game systems later.
Any idea when It will be ready for 4th ed ?

Thanks
Stan
