Do I need to buy Bestiary 1 to be able to add an animal companion for my Ranger?

Ok, I had huge problems figuring out how to make it work, so I assumed that it had to do with me missing the Bestiary, so I bought one.
I eventually figured it out how it works, but I wonder what I´m going to do with the Bestiary
I really don´t know what to do with it, since all I´ve done so far with Hero Lab is handling the character sheets for the group.

Well you can for example pick a "Rune Giant" slap 7 levels of Samurai on it. Give it some dangerous weapons and heavy magical armor. Boom 2 minutes of work and you have yourself one dangerous encounter for your party! In example here is the Rune Giant Samurai I made for the end of my RotRL AP.

If low level you can pick say a goblin and put on a the "advanced template" and boom you have have a Goblin Champion.

The bestiary works great to make new especially adjusted monsters for your players.

You can also now more easily use the Tactical Console to run your games. You import all your PCs and some of bestiary monsters into HL and now easily run the encounter with the monsters and PCs being tracked for you.

If you start using the editor to create new monsters it will be much easier as the bestiary has all the "Generic" abilities done and coded for you. So need Grab, or Constrict, or Breath Weapon just slap it on and away you go.

Lots of good things to do with the Bestiary data set.

for the bestiary, they just show up as races in your character sheet. just select the monster you want, and va la its there.
