Missing Sources for Stock Rappan Athuk heroes?

Lonewolf147

Well-known member
I just noticed this (not sure when it started) but whenever I go to load a stock Rappan Athuk hero/monster, they are all listed showing Missing Source. When I load them I get a different error for each person.

How can I figure out what source I'm missing? I don't believe I had any missing sources when I first installed the RA files after getting them from Kickstarter.

In Hero Lab, when you see error messages, you can right-click them and copy them, then paste them here. Seeing the exact error message would be helpful.

If you click through this error, are there any problems making use of these monsters? Normally, missing source errors are glitches that can be ignored (although if I know exactly what the message is, I can stop it from happening in the next update).

I have also sent this to the Deep Cave Frogs, so we should hear something soon.

Here's a couple of the different error messages from a random selection of monsters:

Bone Warriors (Falcata)
One or more required sources are not accessible for hero 'Bone Warriors (Falcata)'. Subsequent errors may be the result of this problem.

Arach
One or more required sources are not accessible for hero 'Arach'. Subsequent errors may be the result of this problem.

Dragnmoon, yes, I did install the fix a few weeks back when it came out. Thanks for double checking though.

Lonewolf,

It looks like you are attempting to open a stock file from the Tome of Horrors Complete (ToHC) dataset, without the ToHC license. While some of the creatures reappear in RA and ToHC, looking at the IDs (rFGOilSha) tells me that you are opening the ToHC version.

That's interesting, as each one of those were selected from the 'Stock Heroes' that were listed starting with FGG. You're right that I don't have the ToHC license but that shouldn't affect every FGG monster should it?

Here's some screen shots:

If you notice, on the "Choose Stock Portfolio" window you pasted, there are monsters listed as "FGG Miscellaneous Monster", "FGG Monsters (Xxxx)" and "FGG Rappan Athuk Xxxx". The only stock files that the RA dataset gives you is the "FGG Rappan Athuk Xxxx" ones. The others are a part of the ToHC license.

Ahhh, now that I didn't catch. I do still have missing sources listed for the RA monsters though. Here's level 0a, for Abbot Grosso

I'm at work and can't check my files, but here I go from memory: Some of the NPCs in Rappan Athuk were created using material form the Pathfinder add-on book library (Advanced Player's Guide, Ultimate Magic, Ultimate Combat, Bestiary 1-3, etc.). The files require you to have those files for them to work.

We have gone back and forth in the company whether we should include content from all Paizo sources (base books, not campaign specific books) or just the base Core rulebook. To get the feel for some of our NPCs, we really need to use the extended books. And, to be perfectly honest, we like the extra content in many of the add-on books, so our NPCs are not the same stagnant NPCs churned out adventure after adventure.

What this means for the digital fans is this: we are basing many of our NPCs of existing Hero Lab files for several reasons. We don't want to recreate the wheel with the data sets, and in fact it may be quite illegal for us to do that. In any case, it's not a cool business practice, and Paizo has been very good to us (and the entire community) over the years, so we're not going to step on their sales by releasing duplicate content. We are relatively new at providing this type of content, and are figuring things out (and making mistakes) which will be ironed out this year. We're trying to make our customer service top notch, to bolster our own name brand, give some support to the Lone Wolf guys where we can, and support the digital community in general (digital is the future, IMO).

So, the RA files use some of the extended data packages, and as such, the files will probably not work for anyone who doesnt have them (we have already been blasted for this in a couple forums, but feel free to pile on). This is stated on the purchasing page, and folks who received them in the Kickstarter actually got them for free, so the best I can do is try and help with any errors we have caused, and if the files are not working for you, they are possibly found somewhere in the community for you to try ( I do not know if they are, and I hope they are NOT, as they would not be a supported version).

Anyway, continue to post issues, and we will continue to work out the bugs.

The community does not duplicate any work that is already existing (that is what 3PP companies are for). :D

So you won't find anything from UM, UC or other Official data sets in the community repository with the exception of some really old ones like Dwarves of Golarian or Adventurers Armory. The reason for these still existing is that at the time LW was NOT doing the additional books the community was (which mostly consisted of little oh me). When LW got the ok to put in paizo stuff officially those data sets where rolled over to LW and I agreed to not do more and to only provide bug fixes for the ones we already hosted.

What this means for the digital fans is this: we are basing many of our NPCs of existing Hero Lab files for several reasons. We don't want to recreate the wheel with the data sets, and in fact it may be quite illegal for us to do that.
These are sold reasons here and we do the same for say the "Community Bestiary" which is why it requires so many official packages to load. But at the same time the minimum packages to load is not the same for what each individual .por file may require. In example if a .por pulls a weapon from the "Inner Sea Bestiary" then everything will load just fine except for that weapon. The answer means for a person to either use the .por without the weapon or purchase the missing data package and get access to it.

So this does mean when you load a .por file it may open with messages about missing Things. But if you open it and just says Missing Sources and no other messages then its just a warning about a missing source (ie something you check mark in "Configure Your Hero" window) and nothing more.

The easiest solution of course in the above cases is go buy every single data package LW sells. :) Then this would not be an issue.........

What shadow says. Buy the official stuff, support the official stuff, make your life easier, have shiny new stuff, get the 3PP stuff which is just a shiny and new.

Weeeeeee easy life!:D

3PP Embrace the shiny new stuff!

Options, the choice of a discerning connoisseur!

Lonewolf147,

This is showing Missing Sources because of the mix-up with the same source file being used in the RA package, and the ToHC package that was sent to LW. The stock files are still looking for the sources that are tied into the ToHC license, even though the RA dataset does not require that license.

As Skeeter mentioned, they are just getting into the digital version of their products, and there was a learning curve involved in this. In an effort to provide the best possible products for their customers, FGG have enlisted the help of several of the community contributors (myself included) to assist the Deep Cave Frogs prevent these opportunities from arising again.

With that said, I am hoping to have an updated release of the RA dataset, with corrections, modifications, and updates to the codes in the near future for FGG's. Stripping the sources that are tied into the ToHC dataset will be a part of that. I can't give a specific date on this at this time cause Skeeter has all the Deep Cave Frogs working on some projects and I am trying to do it amongst all those, but my own personal goal for completion is fast approaching. :D

Until that time though, as ShadowChemosh mentioned, you can still use the stock monsters even with those missing sources.

Any update on this? Getting ready to run RA, and I'm setting up the encounter with the mutated mimic on Level 1. I'm getting the following errors:

Errors were encountered when loading the saved portfolio! A record of these errors can be found in the file "C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp\hero_lab_load_issues.log". If you notice incorrect behaviors in your portfolio, please report it to the data file authors (you can contact them from the Help menu).

One or more required sources are not accessible for hero 'Mutated Killer Mimic'. Subsequent errors may be the result of this problem.

I've got the ToHC package enabled as well as UM, UC, UCmpg, APG, UE, Bestiary 1-3. In looking at the configuration of the hero, I don't see any valid sources (there are no user sources defined). Am I doing something wrong here?
