The system currently calculates the weight of a gp at 1/3 oz (50 to the pound).

I would like to use smaller coins in my campaign (coins the size of an American dime - about 180 to the lb).

Is this a change I can make, or would it become problematic in other areas?

Weight for coins is held on a Thing called "Money" in the editor and is located on the "Gear" tab. You can make a copy of it and use the "Replaces Thing ID" to have your changes override the CORE version.

In this case you would want to change the final line of the script that divides by 50 to divide by 180.
