What is the best way to share POR files between computers?

Specifically, I want to be able to share between my laptop and my iPad. Ideally it would update automagically via iCloud and still allow me to access the characters on the iPad even when I'm not connected to the net.

Unfortunately, not all the places I play at have a wireless access point.

I woudl have suggested USB stick, but Apple doesnt support it. Any laptop can be a peer wireless network access point, I have connected two PCs that way many a time, however never tried it with an Ipad.

Thanks for the response, Exmortis.

I was hoping to leave my laptop at home as well. I often walk to the games and there is also a limited amount of table space at most locations. Much easier to just carry the iPad, dice, and (in the case of PFS play) required dead trees.

I've just started messing around with the program, attempting to put a couple of characters in it for both non-PFS and PFS play.

When playing, I would like to just use the iPad. I think it also has a better interface for in-play use.

Setting things up would be a little easier on the desktop. Easier to swap to a different screen if I want to look something up.

So the big problem under those circumstances is keeping the files coordinated, so that changes on one machine are distributed to the other once a net connection is made.

Even with a USB converter, the USB drive really isn't what I want. I want the cloud to maintain a consistent view of the files but allow offline access.

Most of the time after I update a portfolio, I will email the Por file to myself and hang onto it, in case I need to load it to my iPad, or if the DM wants a copy. Not sure if this is an option you're looking for.

Currently you will need to email the file to yourself to get the updated version off the iPad. You can use a cloud service to get it to load onto the iPad but does not yet auto-update back to the cloud service.

Yeah, the iPad throws a wrench into it. Hopefully, a future version of HeroLab for iPad will support things like the Dropbox API, so you can put the .por file in dropbox and have your iPad open from and save straight to dropbox. Then you can easily share the file between devices. But until then, it won't work.

Alright, good to know.

Hopefully they will make this easier in the future, but for now it is either e-mail of POR or iTunes I guess.

Thanks for all the quick replies everyone! Much appreciated.

I've been running mine by RDP'ing into my home computer. This way I never have to bother with moving files, as I'm only ever running it on a single machine. The hero lab window is not that complicated, so the RDP link is very efficient. I did modify the pathfinder background image to turn it into a solid color, instead of the paper texture, and it made a huge difference in speed. Plus, Android.. :-)

I used to have a Dropbox as the default save directory for the PCs HL and then it was just a question of having the dropbox app on my iPad.
