Windows 8 Problems

I am have trouble running Hero Lab under Windows 8. At times it will run fine and then it will go a couple of days messing up. What happens is that when I try to save a portfolio it will throw a Windows Error and say the program was stopped, sending a report to Microsoft, will let you know if there is a solution. Then it closes.

I ran a compatibility test on it and it said that running it under Windows XP service pack 3 was the way to go.

Tried that, same problem. Clicked the detect issue button and it said that it was an incompatible program.

I am running the latest Hero Lab and with Pathfinder.

A little update. Tried saving a portfolio in Savage Lands and Pathfinder Beginner Box and it worked fine. It is in the Pathfinder game set that it is not saving.

I've tested Hero Lab under Windows 8 with Pathfinder and didn't run into any problems, with saving or otherwise. Can you give me the exact error message you get when the program crashes, or a screenshot of the crash window? Is there a "more details" button you can hit to get additional crash info? If so, that would be very helpful also.

Thanks!

Hero lab runs fine, except, I've noticed for some reason, that both Steam and Hero lab keep seeing the PC as a new computer every couple of days. I've ran out of my number of activations because of this issue.

Xorntobebad, that definitely sounds like Something Is Up with your computer. How many times has the reactivation been triggered - just once or twice, or more than that?

Have you used Windows 8's "wipe computer" functionality at all, or restored from a system restore point, or anything like that?

Colen: I had Windows 7x64 and ran Herolab for about a year without any issues. Upgraded to Windows 8 (didn't do a wipe install because I was worried about license for Herolab, but it still flagged as a new PC which I figured would happend and it reactivated fine).

These are the weird issues I've noticed with Windows 8:
Every couple of days I've noticed Steam will flag as me being on a new computer. This is the same time that Herolab flagged me as being on a new pc too.
The only thing I've done differently is plugged in a LCD and Keyboard. No major updates or software changes other than installing Filezilla and updating Itunes.
Since upgrading I've had to force close the entire PC and manually turn off the computer. Once after that Chrome.exe got corrupted. It's possible that the license file got damaged during the force shutdowns. I have a solid state drive so it's unlikely espeically since I wasn't even running HeroLab.
I emailed support and they reactivated my license, but I'm hesitant to reactivate until I'm sure Win 8 is stable. I'll use Steam as my test. If it tells me I'm on a new computer again then I know Herolab will see it as a new computer.

I might even just wait until buy a nice shiny ultrabook/tablet before I reinstall/reactivate.

I just curious if anybody else was having weirdness on Windows 8 especially since Windows 7 was super stable.

I haven't seen any problems like this reported by anyone else who runs Windows 8, and our testing on Windows 8 didn't reveal anything like this.

Combined with Hero Lab and Steam flagging you as being on a new computer, that makes me think that there's something weird with your machine that's causing this. :(

Please try the following: Create a new (blank) character, then go to File -> Save Custom Output, and choose the "Generate XML File" option from the list. Does Hero Lab crash when doing this?
