Will Hero Lab go cloud?

Another feature that would be cool is if my application could connect to my players. That way I could add and view their characters over the web. They would see any changes I make during combat and they could manage their own character and I could see the spell, feats, and skill effects on my screen.

I'm personally of mixed feelings about the prospect of HL going cloud. While it would let me use HL anywhere there's a net connection, does have a few drawbacks.

First, it requires that internet connection. While Wi-Fi is easier to locate these days, it's not everywhere. Second, (and this is a biggie with me) it makes it more complicated for users to add their own content to the program. My main game is M&M, so I can mostly get by with the datasets as written. Buuut what about people who play D20, Pathfinder, etc. and want to take advantage of all the third-party content that's out there? I'm not saying that it couldn't be done; I'm just saying that it would be very complicated.

You make some good points and I agree they shouldn’t stop issuing desktop clients. I was thinking that a subscription model of a $5.00 per month would be cool. One would hope that you could gain access to an entire game system this way with all the expansion as well as some additional features over time. I’m not saying this would be easy there are licensing issues to consider with the publishers but that can be overcome.

The “cloud” approach is very appealing to business because it provides a steady revenue stream. As a customer, I find this desirable because I know the company has a better chance of thriving. This usually means better support for their products. Mostly i would like a place on the web for both my players and myself to game from.

Then you have people like me who would rather pay $95 (or whatever "everything" is I don't remember when I bought it) than pay any subscription.

I also have issues with my data not being safe, but rather being held captive on some remote server I have no control over.

I also have issues with the required Internet access, because I never have Internet access (wifi) at any moderately large convention or larger because it either a) is completely useless due to thousands of people hammering it and times out every web page including google or b) cost $14 a day to use.

So from my perspective, a web version is close to pointless at worse and mostly useless at best.

I would love a cloud like feature... similar to Iplay4e was/is for character builder.

But as for actual hero lab being online. The reason I bought hero lab is because character builder for D&D 4e went cloud.

There are major pros and cons to both approaches. We're working to figure out how to find a balance that will work well for just about everyone instead of polarizing users like the DDI changeover. We've got some good ideas and just need to get them implemented next year.
