Will Content Marketplace content be additive?

I'm curious how the items for sale in the content marketplace will work. If I create a realm of just monsters, magic items or even temples for sale, will that be able to be imported into any other RW realm? Or will it come across as a standalone realm that isn't connected to what I've build elsewhere?

And is there a global rescan option to integrate all the goblin/healing potion/temple of Ra references to the new downloaded entries?

We're planning to start officially answering the above questions - and a whole lot more - about the upcoming Content Market next month. So please stay tuned... :)

Well, I'm negotiating with a company about converting their line of adventures to the marketplace and I need to know how much I will have to put in each adventure. Can I make a 'sub-realm' of background info common to each adventure or will I have to add it to each one?

If you can't answer yet, that's fine, but any hints would be helpful with getting things ready the right way up front.

In that case, I recommend you contact Liz and either she'll get you the info you need or put you in touch with someone who can. You can PM her on the forums or email her (using her name at wolflair.com).

I would just urge Lone Wolf to release as much info on this as you can as soon as you can. This very question has dogged me through my entire Realm creation process only because I have not known how to correctly contain all my content within the various "sources" I have been creating. (Do I create a container within each content category so as to contain the data for that "module"...within my main Realm. If so, which container would best be suited? ie Events = "Events List" or "Storyline" as top level container for a specific and separate module within my Realm?)

I have watched probably 30 hours of every video online trying to figure out and piece this all together. It is not difficult to see how it all would work if your just creating a single story line / simple campaign with RW...but the more complex and honestly, more true to an actual homebrew type of gaming group situation...it has been a beast trying to organize it all correctly.

I feel like I have been trying to do algebra the past 3 months. :)

@gamsOnline, are you talking about organizing content for use by YOU for your games, or talking about creating content that you want to sell down the line? @MintMMs was talking specifically about creating content to sell.

If you're creating content that you plan to use at your table, then all you need to worry about is creating the content so that it makes sense for you. :) There is no "right" or "wrong" way, though we make suggestions in our documentation. Many of the community members here can also make some suggestions.

Liz, please post the guidelines for everyone. It's not a right or wrong issue, it's a best practices and knowledge one.

My understanding of the Marketplace from the Kickstarter was that it would contain published material and other stuff. It's the other stuff that many of us are compiling and thinking of how we can make a few dollars with a handful of NPCs or a nice map or a populated inn or a one-off adventure to fill an hour of play or or or.... Or maybe we'll give it away because it will help the community. My understanding of the Marketplace was that every single person could publish their material for free or ask for payment. We ALL need the standard publishing guidelines. Even those that will never publish as the official guidelines are the official best practices.

This.

Whether you are doing conversion of existing material for someone else or prepping your own material for possible future distribution it would be extremely helpful to have a single set of best practices.

The "Best Practices" is the documentation, especially the Tips & Tricks PDF. There are some sections still outstanding, and we'll continue to update it as time allows. However, the documentation is and will continue to be the official "Best Practices."

We'll absolutely be providing the information to everyone. However, certain bits of information are being made available in advance to people working on preparing content for established publishers. It's really nothing more than "keep X in mind" and "plan to do Y once we outline the specifics" right now. And it's very informal.

The moment that we publish formal guidelines, there will be a deluge of questions from users. That will derail precious resources from actually getting the Content Market into place. So it's a juggling act.

The overall rollout of the Content Market will have multiple STAGES, which we'll begin detailing very soon now. We're NOT going to suddenly go from no Content Market to everyone can share material freely overnight. It's going to be a step-wise process, and we're focusing first on the initial stages.

We're navigating a complex process with a tiny team, and we'll quickly drown under the flood of questions if we start publicly outlining everything prematurely. Please remain patient, just as you all have been thus far.

The other important factor, which was the intent behind Liz's comments, is that the guidelines are just that. They are SUGGESTIONS and entirely subjective. Just because we think something is the preferred approach, that doesn't mean it's the best approach for everyone. Granted, for anyone publishing content, there are certain details that will be required so that everything integrates smoothly for everyone. But that doesn't mean everyone has to follow those guidelines within the their own content.

Hope this helps!

Could those of us working on 3rd party data entry at least have a forum where we could hash out some issues on our own? I'm running into some stuff that clearly needs a standard approach and also clearly wasn't taken into account in setting up RW.

If there's stuff that "clearly wasn't taken into account", then please let us know about it. It's possible that we've overlooked something, and I'd like to know about it sooner as opposed to later.

If we setup a public forum for this purpose, we're essentially opening the flood gates that I outlined above. We could potentially create a private forum, but I'm not sure how much use that will be on only an interim basis. So let's start with you providing us with a clear idea of what information you're seeking. Then we can figure out the best way of handling things to get that information to you (which could be setting up a forum).

One thing that RW simply doesn't seem set up for is things like credits and the OGL or any sort of legalese which of course is necessary for commercial products.

Another is cover artwork. I'm pretty sure that the producers expect the first thing people see of their product is their art not the Realm home page.

Legalese: given the highly variable nature of such items, I'd leave it up to the individual creators. Credits should be included on the product info Topic/Article and can be included in each Topic/Article if desired. For the OGL specifically, I'd include the appropriate copy of the license as a snippet in my product's info Topic/Article and the appropriate specific info as the last section and/or snippet at the bottom of each Topic/Article, with a link back to the product's Topic/Article. (See an individual feat/ability/etc. entry at the d20PFSRD site for the idea I'm stealing.)

Cover Art: I expect this will be much more important on the website where you purchase content than in a Realm Works realm. It should be included with the product info Topic/Article and can be included in the Home page of the realm for the product.

Both the question of cover art and legal text/credits has been fully thought through. It's not baked into the structure of the basic realm for a reason. We'll be detailing how that will be handled in the future. You'll also see plenty of examples with the initial rollout of the Content Market. So please don't fret over those two aspects. :)

Since I'm one of the people who will be creating the examples that will be setting the precedents for others to follow I think I will think about it. Otherwise the ones I produce won't have them and my employer will be quite displeased.

The first wave of content will be produced entirely in-house by us. That's where the examples will come from and where the precedent will be set for everyone else.

The handling of the legal text and cover art will be fully integrated into what actually gets published and sold. The mechanism for doing that is part of the content publishing process and NOT part of what anyone has access to within Realm Works right now. It's legal text and the cover art, so it's fundamental to all content that those two items need to be managed. As such, it will be handled in a structured manner that is consistent across all content.

Up above, I indicated that there are a number of things that we're telling people to "plan to do Y once we outline the specifics". The legal text and cover art are two of these things. So please don't worry about these two items and trust that we'll be providing a formalized mechanism for handling them prior to anyone publishing their own content. If you are worried that your employer will be displeased, please contact us using the process outlined by Liz in the thread below (i.e. CCing your employer), and we'll make sure your employer is clear on whatever they need.

Thanks!

Good god, no! Maybe if I were to buy a stand-alone realm that could make sense. In that instance, you can just put the art on the home page. But I'm looking for content that I can integrate with my realm. The concept of "cover art" doesn't really apply, though I suppose you can add it to the top-level topic/article, though I wouldn't bother to reveal it.

Cover art for an adventure or DM add serves only to make it more attractive when the DM is browsing for content to purchase. In the old days when I bought the modules in print, the players wouldn't see the cover art. The printed book pamphlet would be behind the DM screen.

The only role for cover art in the Content Market would be in an image to show when browsing the store.

Frankly, RealmWorks is a new publishing medium. I would not be surprised to find that some publishers expectations are not realistic... that they expect their RealmWorks product to visually match the "trade dress" of their printed/PDF products, for examples. Some publishers may expect complete control over font size, typeface, and color... and may be unhappy with the selection of styles available or with how those styles will operate (does the user's style for "read-aloud" replace the publisher's, for example? We won't know that until later, but publishers probably need to know that well before we do).

The 3rd party aspects are not something to discuss too much on the forums, though I would expect that it would behoove the people doing entry for the 3PPs to be in frequent communication both with their publishing partners and Lone Wolf regarding these things.
