Why did we lose categories from the main input screen?

While, it's certainly not a deal breaker, why was the category menu removed from the quick create menus? I know the create new content element still provides the ability to select it but it just seems slower and less intuitive. If I'm reading the release notes correctly, the previous functionality has been removed and isn't simply a setting to be changed.

I'm just curious what benefit is derived from this change.
 
There is now a single, consistent mechanism that is always used for creating new content of all types. There are no longer different ways to create certain types of content and not others, which has caused confusion among users in the past.
