What does the * mean

Next to some composition indicators there are "*". What do these mean. I am creating a roster which has less than the minimum number of heroes, and the precise number of lords, but get a message which states:
"too many characters...". I can't figure out why, but when I look at the composition, some have the *. Attached, is the roster.
 
the * means 'duplicate'. so when the exalted demon has composition of "Hero*", it means "hero, and an additional hero", so 2 Hero slots. you have 5 heros and 2 lords.

you have too many character choices because 5 heros + 2 lords = 7 characters and the max for that size of roster is 6.
