Or, more specifically, I want a special item category to either show up empty
or not even appear to be available at all unless either a special comp rule, a
setting, or an option is selected. I've been trying a number of different
methods:

xbrk won't do what I need
the settings options in the datadef only apply to units
I tried making an option on the primary 'unit' which would assign that unit a
type. I'd like to be able to simply flag the items themselves (few in
number) to become legal if the option on that unit is selected, but
the items would be chosen by other units. I see how I could do it by
modifying *every* unit and changing the spec: setting to include an
-istype, but that'd be a pain in the butt.

I don't see a way to make items legal based on an istype setting.

Ideas?

Could you use 'glob', to give the option to every unit without having to
manually assign it to each one?

I did try that, actually. It seems to work out in one of a couple ways:

If I just give it 'glob:incl' then every unit gets it automatically.
If I give it 'glob:cost' then I have to select it for each player.

What I'm trying to get here is where if I select it on one unit (the coach),
that it activates the option for all other players, if it's possible.

Ah. No, I'm afraid that's not possible. Sorry :)

However, you can use types and "trat" to ensure that if the option is
selected on the coach, all other units also select the option. The user
will have to select the option manually for each other unit, but AB can at
least warn the user if the option isn't selected for all of the units.

Hope this helps,
Rob
