validating unit sizes

I am trying to set validation messages for:

A leader has a set unit size range (minimum/maximum), and a list of
models he can choose from to comprise the unit. I have the leaders
set up as units, the soldiers set up as units that attach as children
via options, options to track the special abilities, and items for
the optional stuff.

I tried the "lead" External Attribute, and got a validation flag
saying the minimum was not met, but could not get the children to
count towards the unit size. Is there a way to do it? I cannot go
the "pick a unit, then attach a leader" route, as the one leader can
have many model types under him.

Thanks in advance.

The 'lead' unit external attribute is intended for use with the
leader/follower mechanism, which is different from the child units that you
are using. I believe you can see it in action in the Warhammer 40,000
files, with the Imperial Guard Platoons / Lieutenants.

Is there one 'default' type of model that must always be present? If there
is, you could make that the main unit, and then have the leader and all the
other types of children attach to that. If not, you could keep the leader
as the parent unit, and accumulate the unit sizes of all child units into a
stat; then a simple comparison on that stat (making sure it was within the
min/max limits) would let you know if there was an error.

Hope this helps.
