I'm having the same problem. I've currently got the trial version
(trying to buy the product, but well... see my other post), and I've
downloaded the Warhammer 40k file. I've downloaded it, and updated
it, like I have all the others, which all work, but then it crashes,
leaving me with "Army Builder (Not Responding)" in my ctrl+alt+del
box.

Is this something to do with the fact I've got only a trial edition,
or is it something to do with files?

It should be neither of those. When you say you "updated it", how far do
you get? What is the last message or dialog you see before Army Builder
stops responding? As far as I know, the trial version of Army Builder is
identical to the 'full' version with respect to downloading and importing
files, so it shouldn't be anything to do with that.

And please note, when we get a report of a problem saying something like "I
tried updating the file and then it stopped responding, what is wrong?",
and there's nothing immediately obviously wrong with Army Builder (in this
case, I downloaded and imported the latest 40k files to make sure that
everything was working, and it was), there's really nothing we can do
except ask for more clarification. Imagine if you phoned your car mechanic
and told him that the car didn't work and asked what was wrong with it -
without him inspecting your car or finding out exactly what the problem is,
there's really nothing he can do.

So please go into more details on your problem reports! I'm as guilty of
this as everyone else - every now and again I make notes about things, then
later look at them and find them to be totally meaningless.
