I vaguely remember that its possible to incorporate hero lab if you are using realms works. Is this the case, or am i mis-remembering?

mirtos,

On the Kickstarter page, go to the bottom of the page where the FAQ is, and check out entries 18, 19 and 20.

TL : DR
Yes

ok, thats what i thought. So here's my question. Would portfolios be stored on the cloud? What about custom rules? custom classes? etc...

Absolutely! You would attach portfolios to the NPCs or encounters that you manage within the Realm Works. They would then be stored as part of those records in the cloud. Custom rules and classes could be entered using the Articles mechanism within Realm Works. Then they would be revealable and sharing with players, also living within the cloud.

Hope this helps!

It does. I have players living in multiple states now, and i havent fully convinced them to get Hero Lab because its been a pain to provide my custom classes/feats, so ive been maintaining all the character sheets and providing them PDFs when they levelled. But I think I could convince them to get a few copies of Hero Lab if all they had to do was use the cloud.

Thanks

One question I have is: If I create a Article for a PC and we attach the PC's portfolio to it... can both of us open... save and then re-add the portfolio?

I'm using dropbox right now for that kind of thing... we both have access to the portfolios of the characters.

There's a critical difference between portfolios and data files when it comes to Hero Lab. Realm Works will allow you to attach portfolios and outline how your custom classes/feats work through articles. However, the data files would be a completely separate thing. We have on the todo list the ability for GMs to host their own custom Hero Lab data files in the cloud for player access as well, but that's separate from portfolios and hasn't been implemented yet. I'm not certain whether that will make it in by the V1.0 release. If not, it's definitely planned, but I don't want you thinking it's in there when it might not be available immediately. :)

My previous examples were focused on NPCs and the like that only the GM controls. In the initial launch of Realm Works, it will not be possible for both the player and the GM to be editing the same portfolio. One will need to own it and have write access, while the other will treat it as read-only. This is an area where we plan to enhance things further, but it's not an immediate feature we'll be adding after release. Things like individual player reveal are higher on the priority list.

Very much so... Just more of commenting on "this would be neat."

Although, could a player own a portfolio and the GM be read only? That way the GM has access to the portfolio at anytime and could make sure things are right?

Mirtos, you could always just setup a shared dropbox folder and have them have access to the files that way. And you could store the portfolios on the same folder. That way the players can edit themselves and you can see the changes.

It's how I'm running my shadowrun campaign. Two of the players have HL and update the files in dropbox.

I know, ive thought about doing that. and i might just. I would have to store the .user files there as well. My big problem with that is what other people have mentioned. I have a party of 6 players. I keep the portfolio up udring the game to maintain things. But at the same time, the players shouldnt have access to see what the other players have. This is why i havent done that. player x has actually stolen from player y, and they havent discovered it yet. so for now i maintain the character sheets and email them at the beginning of each session. I was hoping to be able to have realms works separate a group portfolio into a player portfolio. In other words, they could "download" their info.

By the way, its not about trusting the players, but if they were to accidently see something, it would ruin the enjoyment for them. I could always say "only look at your character sheet.", but you never know. anyway, i know its a minor issue.

I think what i will probably do is every time i update the portfolio after a game session, is create the portfolios and put them in the drop box folders. just was hoping to do something to take some of the load off. I'm lazy. :)

we do the dropbox thing. We also have each character in their own separate portfolio, and the GM imports them into a central portfolio for gameplay each adventure, and from there adds all the creatures for encounters.

If you require more granular security, you could try google drive or microsoft skydrive instead, then you share only specific things with each player.

well, actually dropbox can do granual security also, by having each player have its own folder... i do that... just didnt do the portfolio method you described.

yeah, Separate portfolios is the way to go.

I've been lucky in that I've had a couple situations where the Rogue of the party has been stealing from the other people IC and the other people know OOC... Been surprised by it.

The only absolute requirement is that the portfolio is owned by one user. That could be the GM or the player. We haven't yet determined the details of ownership handling for PC portfolios, so the specifics aren't known yet. We need to figure that out with the Beta team before release.

Ya, that is something I'd be wishing for as well. the ability to "dynamically" link Portfolio's.

eg 6 Players running Hero Lab, have Portfolios of there own with their character (multiple versions even, ie future levels/plans) and then have the ability to "Import" a given characters into the GM portfolio when ever they change (perhaps in read only mode?).

Although, given the awesome format the Portfolios are in now, I'm thinking of building this on my own using a filewatcher and such, given the data is just text stored in a zip.

Rob, on the original question, is the integration into Realm Works just an "attachment" level integration or can RW, say, read the Portfolio and display data, eg NPC notes, portrait, XP, etc? And as a bonus, can RW update a Portfolio back? eg you update XP or background notes?

Initially, the integration will be similar to an "attachment", although some extra utility will be provided. For example, you should be able to store a Hero Lab encounter portfolio with that encounter in RW and trigger it to be imported into a running copy of HL for using the Tactical Console. Over time, we'll be expanding the functionality, which is now much easier with the new portfolio format. It will be an incremental process.

instead of the portfolios (or in addition to) we can store the PDF's, that HL could generate I'd assume? This way if not every one of my PCs has HL, they could still see their data?

Thanks for the response, future integration is wonderful news :)

FYI: Most of the integration I would like to see is in regards to Player Portfolios. Having my players place there portfolios to the "cloud" where I can view/edit them would be nice.

Is there any possibility of having an "Auto-save" feature in Hero Labs in the future? So cloud syncing of profiles is a little more dynamic?
