Trouble with archetypes w/Custom Monk

Active member
I am making a custom monk class for a homebrew campaign. I have almost everything the way I want it but after I choose archetypes they are red on the class tab with the error "Linked Class Required".

Any ideas?

Yep. You never linked the archetype to the class (ie Monk). You do this in the editor on the "Class->Archetype" tab and make sure the first option "Class to modify." is monk.

Wait...what? You can't modify class archetypes in hero lab...So lets say my custom class is MONK2. I need to set up a Archetype in that tab to mimic the one I want and set "Class to modify" to MONK2?

I don't get what you are trying to say here as of course you can modify archetypes in HL. I can modify an existing one (granted more work) or create new one from scratch.

Sorry missed you said "new" monk. Yes if you have a new class you have to make new archetypes. Hero Lab does not know that your Monk2 is the same as the Monk core class as they have different unique ids.

Personally I unless Monk2 is 100% different than a Monk I would just make an archetype to apply to the base Monk and make the changes you want. This is often WAY easier than making a whole new class.

Another idea is if your Monk2 is the ONLY monk class allowed in the campaign then I would replace the Monk class with your Monk2. Then everything like archetypes from the old monk will still work.

In the editor, on the lower right side, you should see a field for "Replaces Thing ID", enter in the unique ID of the original there.

I've done most of the leg work on creating an archetype but I can't seem to get it to work with the Paizio monk. I had the 1st level of Monk and then go to add the archetype and it isn't there but there is something above it,"fighter", and that is the "name" I gave it while creating it.

You created a new Archetype for the Core Monk. But after you did a Test Now or reload of the game system the Archetype does not display? Did you set the Archetype to a specific Source and didn't turn that source on (ie Configure Your Hero)?

Maybe easier if you posted your .user file. :)

Here is the .user file. I also attached a screenshot of what I'm talking about.
Ahhh I see what you did now. You clicked the check mark on the right side "under" the blue buttons that says "SHOW ONLY". That is what you use to make a "Header" or separator between each classes archetypes. So HL is showing "Fighter" as a Header. Uncheck mark "SHOW ONLY" and reload HL. :)
