The structure export should mark hidden categories

Farling

Well-known member
The contents of the XML file produced when exporting a realm does not indicate which categories are hidden.

This means that if the XML file is used to create a new realm, then the "hidden" categories are visible in the new realm.

It also means that my CSV2RW tool can't hide the "hidden" categories when presenting a list of categories to be used for the import creation.

And that is a good thing. No one wants to import a realm and suddenly find their default categories all hidden and not know why.

It does make a little more work for people who use export/import to reuse their custom schemes.

Kbs666, why is that a good thing? What is requested by Farling is to keep the category status when exporting data to xml. As I understand the information is lost in the export. So if you would export your data and import it again, none of your formerly hidden categories would be hidden.

Therefore +1 , this is a bug not a feature.

Person A exports a realm. They have hidden all the default categories and replaced them with their own custom ones for some reason. Person B imports that realm into their existing realm to get something from it. Now person B would have all their default categories hidden as well and unless they are a sophisticated user they wouldn't know why.

My thoughts:

If you create a new realm based on an export, the new realm should inherit the hidden/not hidden status for all items.

If you import into an existing realm, it should not change the hidden/not hidden status of existing items but should inherit that status for newly created ones.

The import dialog could have a setting to override this default behavior.

Unfortunately, you don't have a choice if that info isn't in the export. :(
