Tech Support Needed - Stuck in a "cannot install" loop

A month or so ago, I downloaded the demo version of Hero Lab along with the Cortex system files. I'm running Vista Home Premium.

I purchased the CD-ROM version of the game at my local game store and tried to activate the already-installed product.

While trying to update the V3.5 Hero Lab program and the Cortex files, I got a "Error writing file to disk... drive may be full" message. The same message pops up for either update.

I've got about 4GB of free space on my hard drive, so it's not likely to be that.

I try to manually locate the Cortex data file, but it tells me that the Cortex file requires a newer version of Hero Lab. Which I can't download for the above reason.

The only game system file offering me access is the d20 system, which I have no interest in.

Any suggestions about how to resolve this issue?

Based on the symptoms you're describing, it's most likely a problem with the security settings on your computer being set to be more restrictive than is usual. When the security settings are high enough, HL's built-in updates logic gets blocked by Windows. To compound matters, Windows does not return any error codes, so HL has no idea that anything went wrong.

Please try launching HL with Administrator privileges. This can be accomplished by right-clicking on the icon you normally use to launch HL and selecting the "Run as Administrator" option. Once you are running HL as an Administrator, try downloading and installing the V3.2a update. Once the download completes, you should see the the installer run - I'm guessing you normally see nothing change once the download is finished.

After the update finishes and you re-launch, you will hopefully be welcomed by the new V3.5 release. If you have any problems running V3.5, I recommend that you try always launching HL with Administrator privileges. This can be achieved by right-clicking on the icon you use to launch HL and selecting "Properties". Go to the Compatibility tab and check the box labeled "Run as Administrator", then save the changes. Now try launching HL again and it should work smoothly for you.
