Hello folks,

I've started the huge project of translating the Savage Worlds settings into my language. In order to do this, I've starting using the authoring kit, and translating only the names, so that all the behavior remain untouched.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I will use the Deadlands settings, which is available for free for the users of the authoring kit (which also receive the Savage Worlds setting).

But by translating it, it's as if I had created my own homebrew rules. So, when I tried to select Deadlands in my list, I don't get it. Is it anyways possible to link back to Savage Worlds using the authoring kit in order to be able to get Deadlands (and from the editor, translate the items there ?) Or is it just not possible ?

And if not possible, are there any other ways to finally be able to translate (no modify, just translate). It is mentioned in the FAQ that HL is built for translation, but I've yet to discover how.

How are you trying to modify the file? Are you copying the entire game system out or are you just opening the Deadlands.user file in the Editor? I'd recommend just modifying the .user file and you should be good if you are only editing display names and descriptions (and not Unique IDs). Deadlands is in review to be updated, though, so that one might not be the best one to start with. Let me know how you're doing this and I'll see if I can help with a better way to do it.

So here is basically how I did it so far :

- Using the authoring kit, I created a new game system. I used the source found in SW directory, and pasted it into my new game system, called Savage Worlds MyLanguage.

- Just using the files, I am currently busy translating all the values for the forms from the files, and recompiling it. It takes time, since I need to redo all the formatting and translating all the explanations. I copy paste from my original book in my language, but it still need work, so it takes time.

- Using the newly compiled source (so my new game system), when I create a character, I would like to use data from Deadlands (since it will be my campaign). It works perfectly when I open HL in the SW setting, I simply need to download Deadlands, and checkmark to use Deadlands settings. But in my project, since it's like a custom set, I would like to link back to Deadlands. It just simply won't let me do this, when I hover my mouse over the setting, it says that user source has not been set. And I cannot download it for my custom setting, since it is just what it is : a custom game built from scratch (even if it is 100% SW translated)

- If there is a possibility to link back to Deadlands once Savage WOrlds has been totaly translated, the translation of Deadlands itself would be easy (I would just open it in the editor, and translate without modifying any other values). The main problem is this : how to link back to Deadlands using my custom game (which is 100% SW translated).

Now, if you know a better way to translate anything in SW just with the editor, without having to need to search for every definition and simply replace (agility, spirit and such) it inside, it would be very easier.

Oh, I don't think you can link it back to the original. Basically you'd just need to download it in the original Savage Worlds and then go to the data directory (on my system that's in C:\ProgramData\Hero Lab\data\savage) and copy the Deadlands.user file over to the data directory for your new game system. Of course then you'd also have to monitor if the original file ever changes and make those changes in your copied file.

As for making translations easier, you've got me there. Maybe Mathias, Caped Crusader or one of the other actual Lone Wolf folk would know more about that. It's definitely outside of my limited experience. Sorry. :(
 
However I should add here that it would be possible to set it up so you are hosting the translated data files. Then anyone who wanted them would be able to download and update them from within the Update mechanism of Hero Lab. They just need to add a new Data Source for updates, is all. I can help with that if you get to a point where you might want to do something like that. There are a few threads on this forum about it, too.

And thank you for pointing me out about the user file. I will definitely try that tomorrow, see if I can load the deadlands.user into my custom game.

As for the translation, it is very very very hard at the moment to translate everything, since the terms are all the place around (I discover chunks of items to translate in a lot of different files, some being obvious (I can translate the basics screen in things-basics), but there are less obvious stuff (I can translate the term for Novice into the file procedures), and even stuff I still have to find where it's hard coded (like the 0 of 5 Left), where I know where it is calculated, but still have to find where it is formated with the words "of" and "left".

So yeah, fully translating is taking time. But I think it will be worth it. After that, translating Deadlands with the editor will be peace of cake :) I will certainly look into it for when it is completed for Deadlands, but I need to check the rights for electronic distribution with the official translator (Black Book Editions, because I use mainly text they translated). I didn't knew it was even remotely possible but if I get an ok, I will certainly look into it.

To make things easier translating, (and this is mainly a suggestion to Wolflair team), it would be quite easy translating if there was the use of a dictionary (variables are common to all languages, but the dictionnary would make it possible, in just one file, to look what to show on screen, rather than having it all mixed in all files). I don't think it would even require a compile, since it would be a look up in the dictionary, make a compare with the set language, and it would appear translated with the use of this dictionnary.

But I agree, moving all hard coded names inside a dictionnary is a lot of work. So, see it only as a suggestion for making HL even widespread (there are a lot of forums in my language that don't use HL just because of this hard work to translate).
 
I can see where distributing translated files could be tricky. I know that Pinnacle has an agreement with Lone Wolf to make any of the official settings available for free (thus all the ones I and others have made that are available as Savage Settings) but I have no idea how that would work with what you're doing. For the most part it's been generally acceptable for folks to say "Hey, I've got a data file, if anyone wants it" and then distributing it from person to person that way, although if any of the various companies chimed in to say "Don't do that" I'm sure that data file would then no longer get a listing in the forum as one available that way. Making it easily available from a standardized/public download site might be more of an issue, though. That I don't know.

BTW, if you get to that point and want a copy of a more up-to-date Deadlands file I have one. No guarantees that it will be the same as the official one that Caped Crusader is working on, but I can say that it is far more complete (and fixes a bunch of bugs) than the current official one so it would get you a bit closer, at least.
 
Out of curiosity, which language? Perhaps Lone Wolf would be interested in hosting it officially. You should also contact Pinnacle, Shane might be interested.
 
I translate it into French. For when it comes to translation, I figured out that there are copyrights applying on top of Peginc. Peginc may decide to make any extension available for free in HL. But for the translation, each language is translated by an outside company (in the case for french, it's Black Book Editions who translated it). That means that they paid translators to bring the books out in the language. That adds a top of layer on top of peginc. And they also have to agree the same way peginc did in order to bring the translation to the public.
