Setting up file import for the iPad

This really has to deal with 1st files in the end. When I make up the HL files for Rite we have usually 2 first files included with each file, the Main publisher one and the one for the product line with the actually product being stored in the user files. I received an error report of somebody getting a duplicate thing when they imported our files and it appears it may be because each have the 1st file with the publisher listed in them. Does this cause a problem and what can I do to fix it?

Thanks,
Andrew

Could you please clarify your question? I don't understand what situation you're trying to describe. Exact error messages and specific steps to reproduce the issue would be helpful.

Sorry. Let me try again. I received a bug report from a customer that went to install our .hl files on his iPad. The error he receives is:

Code:
File: RitePub/1st(line4) - Source - Duplicate record encountered ('RitePub')

RitePub.1st is the 1st file I use for Publisher and every .hl file I make has it in them.

This is a known issue on the iPads and I have posted about it a few times but its a bit technical. Unlike the desktop files do NOT overwrite themselves on the iPad. They all exist in memory. So the iPad currently can't have a .1st file in two different files as it will clash.

Their is no known way around this. The only solution is to have the person install all the .hl files onto the desktop and create one single NEW .hl file. And install that to the iPad.

Long story short the use of .1st files was not clearly mentioned to LW when I was discussing the iPad with Colen. As such this crept up and why their is a fix coming its not anytime soon.

I think I have an idea. If I setup a Powered By Hero Lab link of just the first files, then require that everyone set that up first and then just have the HL files just be user files, it should work. What do you think?

That is one way to go. From what I seen though with what FGG requiring multiple .hl loads I expect you to get allot of support emails. As without the .1st files the .user files won't load at all.

And if someone tries to load any of the older .hl files with a .1st it will cause issues.

I almost think you would be better off for those few using the iPad to have them create their own .hl file. Then just email it to themselves. It won't be very big at all. Plus that way they are sure to have all the exact same .user files on both their iPad and their desktop. Be sure to tell them to copy over the .1st files also. They will have the least number of issues this way and your only impacting those that are using the iPad instead of "everyone".

Blah! none of it is really perfect...

Depending on how you do the Powered by HeroLab (PbHL). If you go through LW, you will have to meet their requirements to get your account set-up, but the user does not have to enter the path to the files to get the download to show up. If you do not want to go through LW, then the customer does have to do an extra set-up.

Since FGG decided to do the method of PbHL that was not through LW, it has led to several problems for people not reading the instructions. Though compare to how many people got the files, it has been a small number of problems.
