Saving USER File to appear on Portfolio list

Hi!

How do I save my own user file so it appears on the list on the portfolio "Change Settings" screen, so it will load up like Rippers or Weird Wars Rome does?

Thanks

You need to make sure that everything in your .user file has a source listed, then that source should show up on your Character Config screen as a new one to check.

There is also the use of a .1st file which I find pretty helpful. Just copy one of the .1st files from some other setting, give it the same name as your .user file (but keep the .1st ending) and modify the stuff in there to match up with your sourceID and you should be good to go. Although be aware that some .1st files are set to handle multiple sources (Deadlands Noir, for example, has sources for both Noir and the Companion) which you can use for examples of how to group certain sources, but for a single source file you may want to stick to the ones that only use a single source for your version.

Sorry, but I have no idea what you mean. Where is this "source listed?"

I apologize for being a newbie.

Give them the same source that you want to be selecting on the Configure Hero screen. The same source that you will be using for any precludes.

Do I make a new source with the name I want on the USER part of the tree?

I mean, do I choose "New Source" and type in the same name and Unique ID, and when all are changed it will pop up on the menu?

Yes, you can click on source, then -new source-, and then press ok. A dialogue box will open where you can put the source id and name.

I appreciate all the help. however...

I AM ABOUT TO DELETE THE WHOLE PROGRAM!!!!

Sorry, but I am frustrated, it just wont work. I made sure to make all the sources set to Freeport with a unique ID of FPX. Saved it. Did not appear. Then I saw the compile option. Did that. Still does not show.

Really, why is this so complicated? What am I not getting?

Thanks again

The best way to learn is to look at something else as an example. Download a setting. Look at its user file and see how it worked. That is how I learned.

Ok, if you are working in the Editor there are some "gotchas" to be aware of to make things show up in Hero Lab. One way is to simply close it all down and restart Hero Lab, that should get all your changes (assuming your .user file is in your Data directory, it should default to saving there, but it's worth making sure it is there.) The other way is in the Hero Lab Tools menu select not only the Compile but follow that up with Quick Reload. The reason it's like that is that Hero Lab doesn't read the data files off of the computer everytime it needs to look something up, it loads it all into memory so doing the Reload tells the program to re-read the files and put them into memory (that's what helps keep the program nice and quick, so you really do want it to work that way.)

Hmm... that may be exactly the kind of thing we really do need some kind of intro video for. How to use the basics of the Editor and the like. I may have to see if I can do something like that, although it would be for the Windows version only.
