Realm Works Player Version and the Cloud

We can hardly believe it, but Realm Works has been out for over 24 hours! Now that it’s available, we’ve had many people asking us about future features and their connection to the Realm Works cloud service. One of our top priorities is Realm Works Player Edition.

This Windows-based, player-focused version of Realm Works will allow players to access and view content revealed by the GM on their own computers. Players will also be able to leverage all the same powerful features as the GM version, such as full-text searching and user notes. An important component and the driving force behind this feature is our cloud service, which will allow GMs to easily share revealed information with their players.

As we stated in our release pricing announcement, we believe that connecting with your players through the cloud is a core part of Realm Works, which is why we chose to initially include 6 months of free cloud service for all new users. To that end, the 6-month cloud service “clock” won’t begin ticking until GMs can connect with their players through the cloud using Realm Works Player Edition.

This change applies to all our users (both for Kickstarter backers with 6 with cloud service, and those who purchased the product today and in the coming weeks). We anticipate that Realm Works Player Edition will be available for sale in May, so if it (hypothetically) launches on May 5th, your 6 months of cloud service will begin counting down that day, ending on November 4th.

Once the Player Edition is released, users can take advantage of the benefits of the Realm Works cloud as envisioned by our development team, and the cloud service clock will begin ticking. We’ve had a great response to Realm Works so far, and we think both players and GMs will recognize the Player Edition’s value as an integral tool for keeping players engaged with the story.

If you have any additional questions about the Player Edition or cloud service, please ask them here!

* Please note, if you have the GM Edition, you can also use that as a player.

Is the player edition the only way players can access cloud-based content? Will there be a (obviously less robust) web-portal where players can access content?

No. The web access, when completed will be free. This has been mentioned somewhere. It will be less featured than the player account software, though.

Is there any way to defer the start of the start of access to the cloud service?

I know that there are several people wary of starting up RealmWorks since they won't be GMing in the short term, so don't want the count down to start for a while.

Farling, the countdown is going to start the day the player version is out. Regardless if you access the cloud or not. That is the impression I am getting. You can't defer it by not logging in to it.. as I am thinking it is account based and not software based.

Have there been any announcements (or even mere hints) as to how much the player version of Realm Works is going to cost?

So, I haven't even started looking into RW until lately. I am a backer, though, and now have a question:

I am an Alpha Wolf backer, receiving top tier cloud service for the life of my account. At least, that's what the KS says.

Does this mean, that my players don't have to buy the Players software, in order to access my stuff through their browser for EVER?!

Dryder.. The top tier just means you have the most access to the cloud based abilities of Realm Works. It does not give you extra privileges for people outside of your account such as your players. Now the web based browser player version of RW is not implemented nor will it be for a while yet even after the touted player version coming out in May.

It is unclear on if they will charge for the web based version either. ..

hope I answered some of your question :)

"The other option players will have is a web-based interface. This solution will have less functionality compared to the standalone client, but it will be accessible via virtually any web browser on just about any device. Web-based player access should be available sometime after the V1.0 launch and will be completely free for players. (Source: http://www.wolflair.com/realmworks/2013/12/16/release-plan-pricing/ - What are Player Accounts and when will they be available? )

Dryder, my understanding is exactly as yours: You have lifetime cloud access and your players, should they choose to only use the Web access, will be able to do so for free.

Yes, they can purchase the player or full version if desired, but it would not be required for what I'm guessing is required for them to see information you have shared with them via the cloud.

Just to make it official, the answers above are all basically correct. To sum up...

* Alpha Wolf backers get free everything for their personal account for life.

* Players can utilize the web-based access for free once it's available.

* Players can utilize the Player Edition if they choose to purchase it, but there is no requirement to do so. The price is currently projected to be $9.99.

* GMs do NOT need to purchase the Player Edition to access a realm as a player. They will simply use their full copy of the product to do so.

Hope this helps!

player notes

Will there be an option for players to store their notes on the realm? or is the player view just that a view only

Thanks

Rob

Any update on when the player version / player web access will be available? My campaign is getting complex enough that I'm considering starting a wiki for player info - exactly what Realm Works was supposed to replace.

We're hoping to have news about the Player Edition in the next week or so. Thanks for checking in. :)

Just as an FYI they did say that they would have the players version in May :)

Local web reference.

Will it be possible to contain a locally available web service. For instance, could I publish the content locally such that I could access it locally and others on my local network could access it?

Essentially there may be instances in which me and my group may not have internet access. I would like the ability to publish the content so that they can access it via a local web page.
