Realm Works 1.0.39 and 1.0.40, and Major Realm Works Release Status

liz

Ex-Staff
Hello, Realm Works users! Liz here. The Realm Works team is hunkered down focused on the upcoming Content Market, so I’ve jumped in to give an update.

This is the update we’ll be including in the newsletter, which we’ll be sending out later today.

---

Last month, we shared that the team was preparing a major update for Realm Works. Earlier this week, after starting the release process, we experienced a Mr. Bill moment. We uncovered a bug in the upgrade process that we accidentally introduced earlier this year. This bug undermines our ability to cleanly release a new version needing a closely coordinated upgrade between the client and server – something this major update requires. If we had completed the release with this bug in place, it would have caused confusion and frustration for almost everyone.

A critical priority for us is to ensure a good product experience for users, so we chose to postpone the major update this week. Instead, we’ve put out a small release today that fixes the upgrade issue and addresses a few other small things that were not tied to the big enhancements. By taking this approach and delaying the major release by a week or two, we can ensure the upgrade process goes smoothly for users when the major release does roll out. We’re also investigating options that will help mitigate the upgrade issue for anyone who misses the interim release.

While there are no significant enhancements in today’s release, it's very important that users install this update. We want the forthcoming major update to go smoothly for everyone, and the way to achieve that is by first grabbing today’s release. To make it easy to get this new version, here’s a link that’s hard to miss:

We realize that users are eager to get the new enhancements included in the major update. We’re just as eager to get them into your hands. However, we’d rather delay the big release than deliver a frustrating experience, and we hope you agree with our philosophy. Thanks for understanding!

In the meantime, here’s a quick teaser of things to look forward to in the upcoming release: native HTML, custom and default styles, major name handling improvements, and a vastly expanded and tailorable automatic linking mechanism. There’s a lot more in the release, but those should whet your appetite for the next week or two…

----

Edit on 10/03/15 - We released a new build this morning to fix an issue that was affecting users in scaling mode. The link above can get you the new update, or you can download it from within Realm Works by checking for new updates.

FYI – This update is small and will not impact your data in any way. As such, we don’t believe there should be any risk of disruption by upgrading.

I am going to guess that people using more than 1 machine should make sure to get this interim update on all of them?

Absolutely! I'm not sure what the rationale would be for using one version of a product on one computer and a different one on another computer, especially when data is being shared between them, so I never thought that the clarification should be made. Thanks for getting me to clarify!

The scenario I imagine is someone using one machine only occasionally. Based on timing, I could see someone "skipping" the interim update on the less-used machine.

And, of course, if one scenario can be imagined, there's always at least a few more lurking in the background. :)

Runs fine on desktop, doesn't work on laptop

Hi all. I am a new user and recently purchased Realm Works. I have started building a campaign on my desktop that has gone very well so far. I have a gaming session tomorrow and wanted to show the tool capabilities to friends so I finally got around to installing Realm Works on my laptop. The laptop I am running is a slightly older Alienware on Windows 7 running at 1920 x 1080. I installed the application, but am unable to get past the home screen. I log in just fine using my account, but the home screen appears slightly bugged or out of synce with resolution and consequently, I can't actually see all of the buttons necessary to start into my campaign. I have attached a screenshot and was hoping someone has seen this before and can provide some assistance. I am using cloud sync but it should not be relevant to this problem as I log in fine, I just can't access the appropriate buttons. Its not a synchronization issue.

I doubt it matters, but I wanted to mention Hero Lab works just fine on this machine as well.

I just noticed this behavior as well after installing tonight's update on my laptop. (1.0.1039.199)

Updated with no issues. Explanation mark on the tools tap to bring your attention to the release notes after you upgrade is a nice touch. Really looking forward to the major upgrade coming out in the next week or two.

I posted a new thread that I was unaware might be related to this new update. I happened to do a first time install on my laptop as a new user after having worked in the tool for about a week now with my desktop. Another user confirmed he is having the same challenge on the laptop after installation of the update. When I originally posted, I was concerned it was my laptop, but I'm hoping someone can take a look and confirm if there is a fix.

That's a valid scenario that I never considered. And you're absolutely right about there being at least a few others if there's one. :)

Yikes! Do you have any sort of display or font scaling activated on your laptop? I'm just looking for clues as to what might be going on here. We didn't do anything that I'm aware of in this release with the Launch Dialog that could explain this issue.

@ibecker: Was this your first install of RW on your laptop (like @Malevolus)? Or did you run fine with an older version and then encounter this problem after installing the update? And another question for you: what version of Windows are you running?

In regards to the questions you asked of me.

1. No special display or font scaling. The 1920 x 1080 resolution is the standard default for the laptop screen and I don't do anything unusual with display properties or fonts. I did also try to lower the resolution (it won't go higher on this laptop) and restart, but the problem persists.

In hopes of giving any additional info, I tried plugging in a monitor to the laptop as both a primary display and an extension of desktop running at 1600 x 900. This did not fix the issue.

Additional info that might be relevant. Laptop video card is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M (definitely an older laptop).

I've been using Realm Works on this laptop for months, including earlier today. I haven't changed anything about the setup, other than today's update.

In case it's helpful:
Win7 x64 Ultimate SP1 (fully patched)
16GB RAM
Core i7-4810MQ 2.80GHz
nVidia GeForce GTX 870M

My (less used) laptop will be updated today (good job I bought it with me for a weekend away) and my (vastly more used) desktop will be updated on Monday. Any other week and this would have caught me out.

Launcher Borked After Update

The launcher was fine when I started it this morning. Then, I installed the new update. When I restarted Realm Works, the launcher no longer displayed properly. I rebooted my computer. The launcher is still not displaying correctly.

I have minimum viable functionality in the sense that I can log in or access Realm Works offline. I can also open the Message Center. If I make changes, I can also exit to the Realms List to synchronize with the cloud. However, the rest of launcher is outside of the displayed area. I am particularly anxious about how I will install the next update!

Is there a way I can configure the launcher from the realm application? Do I need to reinstall?

I have attempted to attach a screenshot of the new launcher.

I've taken a look at the code tonight, and there's no smoking gun that I've been able to spot. However, it's an area of the code where I'm not very familiar, so it's quite likely I missed the snake in the grass. The developer most familiar with the code is a morning person (it's 4am here right now), so he'll hopefully be able to take a look in the morning. [Disclaimer: I'm not sure what his availability is like on Saturday morning.] I flagged this to him via email already.

It did take me a few minutes of looking at my laptop before I thought, "Oh, better update it there, too." Colour me confused.

Good thing this post is here. I received an email that set off a lot of phishing warning bells; the links did not go to wolflair.com and had obfuscated names, e.g.:

Code:
https://t.e2ma.net/click/9ry3f/54916k/54l3vb

Not that the Realm Works user base is the largest pool in which to phish, but still, I'm pretty hesitant to click on links like that. The (purported) October Update also isn't on the Realm Works website (news and announcements), and the client itself doesn't automatically notice this download, which makes it seem even less official.

Compare with the links in the forum post:
