I downloaded the update, but now I get a variety of problems. The main one, when the pathfinder data file recompiles, is APBestiary.user (line 234) - Thing - Duplicate record encountered ('raShOther') but then when I load any portfolio I get a big ol laundry list of "Critical information not found in data files: Source (loads of stuff like cheliax, taldor, dwarf book, adventurers armory)... Ideas?

That sounds like a custom data file. Open the editor in Hero Lab, then open data file APBestiary.user.

Before doing the next step though you may want to back up the original file just in case something else goes wrong!

Look for the races tab, as I think the 'raShOther' is a race, look down the list of races on the left of the editor and find the 'raShOther'. Select it and rename the entry or delete it if you want. Re save the file. Then reload hero lab. It should clear the error, however there may be other things that rely upon the unique id which would generate more errors.

Or just remove that .user file and download "Second Darkness v1.1 (2011.09.19).hl" which fixes that problem and adds other new stuff. You can grab it from d20pfsrd.

Damn time zones, I'm at work no HL access so I have to work from memory, and I have no idea what custom package the user file came from.
So what Shadow says will work better!

Ah, thanks, the manual fix worked and I'll get the new file... Question, once time has gone on and one has forgotten, how are you supposed to know "APBestiary.user" is the Second Darkness file? Is there some "About" tab in the editor I'm overlooking?

Yes... Sort of.... In the editor after you open a .user you can go to "View->Author, History, To-Do List". If the original Author filled this info in and can give you lots of info.

Another way is to look at a something in the .user file and look at the "Source" section of the Thing to see which book it is marked against. Another way to figure out its Second Darkness.

For the new .hl files I have tried to give a more standard name of the file so instead it is now PFRPG_Second_Darkness_Bestiary.user. Should make it allot more obvious what it is for.

Finally one of the great new features of the .hl files is that you can go to the "Tools->Manage Third Party Updates". It will list A) What book B) Its version number and C) If you click INFO will even show exactly what .user files where installed. You can also use this window to Back Out/Remove the update.

If LW gives me new features I plan to use them. :)
