Prayer Book

Hi,

I am trying to alter the custom priest class to use a prayer book (thus limiting the amount of spells available like the wizard).

I cannot do this in the editor without knocking out the domain selections.

Any thoughts.

That is the problem, as soon as you make the class use a spell book the editor does not allow domain spell picks.

look at the magaambian arcanist, at 9th level they get holy arcana, this grants them the ability to add spells from the good domain to their spell books, if you have the data package that contains the paths of prestige... then you can grant an archtype for each domain you want to allow for this class.

Just had a look at this and you are right this could be adapted. Bit disappointed really, I have recently moved over to hero lab to avoid lots of excel based coding in other sheets to add house rules e.t.c.

Now I am faced with a new sheet which, although is excellent i have paid a fair bit for (with all the upgrades) and am still facing hours of coding to add the simplest of functions.

Ah well, may just have to stick with pencil and paper :)

Unfortunately, what you are trying to do is not a simple function. For simple functions, HL will make things a lot easier and faster. What you are trying to do is a bit more advanced.

Thats a shame as HL is one of the best tools for DMing I have found in a long time. I am always short on time so the fact that I can modify a monster for the game in 5 minutes saves me so much time. Lets see I need a 11th level evil cleric with mythic levels. Sure I can whip that out with spells and everything in short order.

I would much rather spend time doing your above change one time then ever go back to pen and paper with its mirror of mistakes. :(

Also your dealing with the fact that its not really simple change as your changing the CORE mechanics. So if you really want to go against those mechanic its not simple and will take time. Same as if you wanted to invent a new Base Attack Bonus for a class. Can this be done, yes, but it will take allot of scripting. Where if you just waned the standard FAST for example its a simple drop down box. Very strange rules can be done as I have the rules for Mythic done for HL and HL was never meant to do Mythic rules yet. Yet they are in and working.

My advice is to start with some of your more simpler house rules and as your learning curve with the editor increases come back to things that change CORE mechanics.

Also have you gone over the FAQ question#2 and watched all the videos and read all the info on using the editor as that will make things way less confusing. :)

I also advise reading the "Glossary of Terms" to get handle again on what the forums and everything is saying.

I wish I could say the editor is picked up in 5 minutes as its not. It takes some patience and time to get familiar with it but its SO worth doing as you can eventually put in all your house-rules in and your players will SO thank you for it. :D

I agree. Maybe a work around could be to create a wizard type class in the editor, but give them divine spells. Then instead of using domain spells, give the class extra spells equal to what the domain spells would have been. So basically you have a wizard type cleric is the same under of spells just gotten in a different manner. You could even have a house rule to say that the extra spells had to come from the specific domain that the player chose. The domain could be indicated on the character profile or in a journal.

It would take a bit more tracking outside of HL, but it would do the same thing for you and could be done a lot faster.

Thanks for your answers they have been a lot of help. I program a lot of VBA which i guess is where some of my frustration lies as I am so used to whizzing through stuff in excel. I am running the sheet for the first time for my session on Saturday so will see how it goes.
The wizard class idea is a good one, but another question, when I try to print the spellbook off it is saying that there is nothing to print. Have I missed something?

When you go to print the character, there is a list of options for printing, you should see 2 options, Spells - Full Descriptions and Spells - Summaries. You select one to print. You might need to print the character in 2 different options twice. I find when the spells print, I just get the spells and not the character, so I need to go back and print the character again, and select Standard Character Sheet.

Hope this helps.

Clerics do not have a spellbook, so divine spells are only printed if they are memories or part of a spontaneous casters list.

Having a spellbook for clerics is a cool idea as I know not every cleric in my games have access to every spell.

Plus it means that certain types of spells can be excluded from the list. Playing a good character who can't cast evil spells, taken them off the list, playing a chaotic character, then take lawful descriptors off the list... and so on... plus adding in domain spells into the known spells as well would be cool.

Not sure how to build this, but that's part of your current issue ;)
