Organizing realms

I am currently running two campaigns and as such I have two realms. One for Jade Regent and one for Wrath of the Righteous. Both of my realm are "dirty" meaning I have lots of material that is not in the AP but supports it. For example sections out of CRB, Ultimate Campaign, Cityscapes, book of the damned, ect.

WHEN the content market opens I expect we will see a lot of open content offered from the start. For example I expect we will see Pathfinder CRB either at the opening or shortly there after.

What is going to happen when we try to integrate the CRB into a realm that has parts of it already in it? Are we going to get a bunch of duplicate topics, and we will have to go weed the realm? Or will there be some kind of wizard to duplicate/replace article.

I know this is still a work in progress, but if I know what direction you are heading it could save me headaches latter.

I can't speak for LoneWolf, but speaking as a Database Architect I would expect duplicate topics.

Behind the scenes, I would expect the software to be assigning a code that identifies the Topic, and that's what the software recognizes to identify the Topic. That's why you can create 2 topics with the same name in the same category now (RealmWorks warns you that you're doing it, but you can choose to do it if you want).

That's also how using material from one Realm in another will work, I expect, and why updates to the original Realm will be identified for you to accept or reject in the Ream using the copied data. That was mentioned early on in the discussion of re-using content, but has not been re-affirmed in quite a while.

For these reasons, I have avoided entering much of any mechanics. I also expect that the Core Rules will be available in some form (not necessarily the Core Rulebook).

For the same reasons, I would expect a Publisher (such as Paizo, or others) to want to think about how to manage such things. Paizo's Golarion publications have a history of expanding some articles over time (the deities, for example have been published multiple times .. as 1-column, 2-column, 4-column, and later 32-column articles). They would most likely want the expanded articles to be recognized as updates to the original article, so they would *probably* (speculation here) want to create those articles as modifications in Realms that "copy from" or "inherit from" a main "base Realm" (which may exist solely to provide those behind-the-scenes IDs for all content).

Honestly, if you're working with content that's likely to have an "official" version available (whether purchased or openly licensed and created by the community) then everything you do now is prototyping. At best you'll be able to delete the duplicates and spend a bunch of time fixing links; at worst you're going to end up redoing all your work.

Nothing prevents anyone from keeping what they've done, of course. But if you plan on switching, then you'll have to live with the consequences of doing work ahead of time.

Welcome to software testing. :)

I'm thinking bought content will create a duplicate that you can merge into existing or move existing into the bought.

I'd be willing to bet that all bought content has a unique identifier that will prevent it from being given to someone else via the store (and may also prevent exported out of RW and maybe even from being printed).

Bought content will be very interesting as it has a definite allure but it is also quite poisonous.... Paizo and others need to tread carefully to not piss off their customer base with onerous restrictions while also ensuring they retain control of their material. I'm hoping they learn from the DRM battles that have raged for years and been shown to be completely ineffectual whereas goodwill can and does foster goodwill.

In the survey, they said that you would not be able to export or print any copyrighted content. I think (hope) what they really meant is any copyrighted content that is IP (i.e. that open content, which is still copyrighted, would somehow be known and not blocked from printing/exporting).

I think what they meant was any commercial material from a publisher from the store will be locked down. And this will make commercial material less desirable to some folks.

I certainly won't be buying any modules that I can't alter, make my own and afterwards print/export or (re)use pieces in other adventures. On the other hand, I will probably buy campaign setting materials and rulesets. If I can use monsters from bestiaries in material I can export/print I may consider them as well.

Bought content will be desirable from a time saving viewpoint but poisonous for those that want to mix/match/mold a world or that wish to reuse content in other places.
