Noob Questions

Hi all,

I am migrating my game from 5e to PF and I reactivated my HeroLab account/sub to help with the PC migration. However, I have not touched/used HeroLab in almost a decade and I had some questions.

I did google some tutorials but they are all 7+ years old so not sure they are valid. I am using the Classic app, but happy to use it online if these are limitations with classic:

  • Custom Magic Weapon/Armor - is it possible to add a descriiption of some kind? For example a sword that can cast a spell 1/day.
  • Monsters - is it possible to reduce the HD of a mosnter or it only goes up?
  • Is it possible to create a custom template? or, failing that, adding supernatural abilities like incopreal somwhere?

Thanks in advance.

You can do all of that with Classic. Online has no editor and less customisation.
Most custom stuff will either require you to use an adjustment, or do some basic editor work if a template/adjustment doesn't already exist.
Monsters - adding HD or class levels is very easy. To lower HD you can use adjustments like "Racial HD".

Perfect, thank you. Is there a way to add more traits? Even if it has no mechanical impact and is just a text block for my own reference.

Certainly... feats, traits, etc can all be added with the editor. The easiest way if find an existing thing that it similar, copy it and then edit. You can always ask for assistance here and we'll do what we can to help you out.

Just to mention it, but Hero Lab Classic will be for 1st edition Pathfinder.

Hero Lab online can be for either Pathfinder 1e or Pathfinder 2e (plus other systems).

I finally got around to this and wanted to play with the editor. But I'm not sure what data file I should be opening to add feats, spells, etc. as there are quite a lot of them, or if I should create a new one?

This is for Pathfinder 1e.

For context, I am trying to import/update quite a few of the Ghostwalk feats and spells for one of my PCs, who is a ghost.

Thanks in advance.

Make a new user file. If you add to an existing file and there's an update, you will lose everything you did.

Got it, thanks. Is there a way to edit/convert a 3.0 user file to pathfinder? Looking at the raw data its doesn't look hugely different but not sure what to change to make it compatible.

Or I just need to cut/paste what I want from 3.0 user file to a new pathfinder one?

Both systems use different syntax/coding and thing-ID's. A direct import will not load. The best way is copy and paste small parts of what you want, in order to check what works and try to fix what doesn't - one item/feat/ability at a time.

So I created two ghostwalk feats in a new data file. The first one corrupting touch is just the text, I didn't modify anything from the default editor field.

The second one, enerverating touch, I added all the restrictions listed - non-good, CHA 15 and corrupting as a prerequisite.

I then hit test and I got the message "feat X is ready to use in herolab"

I close the editor and go to add these feats but they do not appear in the list of feats:
