Non class skills and their costs.

I'm very new to DnD (3.5) and I just started to create my character. I have 36 skill points to devide but something is going wrong. I think.

When I want to level a non class skill it should cost 2 skills points to gain one rank (if I'm not mistaken). But when I as a Ranger level a skill like Escape Artist I can put 4 skills points in to get 4 ranks.

The modifier doesn't change 1 - 1 like my class skills do, they level 1/2 - 1. So seeing it that way when I put 4 points in it I do get only a +2 modifier instead of a +4 like my class skills.

But does it display the rank of the skills wrong now? Shouldn't the rank be 2 instead of 4?

Despite your claim to being new to 3.5 you seem to know how the skills system works which I usually spend months trying to explain to my new players.

My guess is you are looking at the Skills tab of the Hero. You mentioned that your heroic Ranger has 36 skill points. Near the top it will indicate how many points you have to spend on skills, and where you have put them. If you have already placed them all, you should be able to scroll down and count them and get back to 36 again.

Hero Lab tracks how many skill points your hero has from each source, where they were spent, and how many ranks the hero has in each skill. Within the Hero Lab's user interface on the Skills tab, it only shows the points spent and the total though. The D20 3.5 setup doesn't have the hover displays some of the other games have (yes we are looking at you Pathfinder), however, if you output the character sheet (or even just print preview) it will show the ranks and ability adjustments instead of the points, just like an old character sheet.
