Moving Snippets

Hi,

first of all: Realm Works is a great product. I'm tested it a few hours and love this new way of organising my campaign.

I have one suggestion: It would be great, if I could move Snippets in Category Management to different sections. Especially if you create sub-sections for a better overview you would have to create older ones again.

When I hit Edit, I can move them to other places on the same screen, just click and drag.

But Edit must be on.

Not sure if that is what you meant though.

If you're talking about moving the sub-categories around in the Category manage section, you can do that by clicking the 'tool' icon next to the top (in the left column) and there are options there.

Topics can be moved. In the Story Almanac, load up the topic you want to move. Next to the "Edit" button is a tool icon with a dropdown menu. You have options there to move topics around to different categories and sections.

Snippets can be moved to different sections by clicking the 'tool' icon on that individual snippet.

Hope that helps :)

@PatJe: I'm not clear on exactly what you're asking. It's possible your question has already been answered by others above, but I'm not certain that's the case. Could you please provide a concrete example of what you're striving to do? Then we can all provide you with an accurate answer. :)

Last night I copied a block of text for a business into a new merchant entry. It included info on the proprietor. I'd split all the info into snippets and then realized that many of the snippets were actually more appropriate under the NPC (individual) rather than the merchant (business) which may be due to my using the merchant as the general container for each location in the town.

I would have liked to tag the 5 snippets to move from the business to the appropriate NPC. Instead, I re-merged them, copied that re-merged text, went to the NPC and pasted and split into snippets again, then I went back and deleted the original snippet from the merchant.

I was only an hour into entering data and I'm still getting a feel for data flow and how I want to organize so it wasn't a big deal. But it wasn't a fast and easy drag and drop action.

Okay, I see what you're saying, there's no easy way to move a snippet from one topic to another without copy/pasting the text. I feel like that used to be an option before. I'll post about it beta-side so hopefully they can get that functionality in there. :)

Being able to select multiple snippets at a time and operate on them collectively is on the todo list. Providing a clean and intuitive way for users to select a group of snippets is actually harder than it may initially seem. There are a wide range of snippet types that can be used, and some of them make this more difficult to accomplish.

The same applies to snippet transfer. Moving snippets between topics is also a bit more complex than it may seem for a simple example. If the destination topic is large, with lots of snippets spanning a variety of sections, where should the moved snippets be placed in the destination topic? That's just one of the questions that arises and that we need to make easy for users.

We're working on solutions for these (any many other) operations. Until we have those in place, it's better to keep things simple, even if it's not as efficient to use as we'd like. The good news is that, after users play around with Realm Works a little bit, they'll get the hang of things and evolve a model that works well for their purposes, just as you've begun to do. Once that's achieved, some of these initial limitations will only occur occasionally and not have a significant impact on overall efficiency.

One option for moving snippets would be a command in the Snippet Option that you can click on then select where you want the snippet moved to. If moving multiple snippets at once is too difficult to create then having the command with the selection of where to move it to and moving one snippet at a time would be good.

This would also be helpful within a topic. I have added snippets in one category only to realize that the info would be better in a different category. I can click and drag it to the right category, but sometimes I have to scroll through a lot of categories/snippets to move the snippet to where I want it. It would be easier to click and select where I want the snippet moved to.

Sorry, has been a long time since asking this question. Had a lot of work and no time for campaign-creation. ;)

My question was about "category management". At the time I was asking I ignored the given categories and created new ones. I often came to situations where I wanted to change categories after the first entries. Some snippets seemed better in other sections or sections should be seperated with sub-sections. But in every case existing sections can't be moved vom Section 5 to Section 4 or even to Section 5.1. So, if you want to reorganise your categories, you'll have to rebuild it in some parts.
