When I add the magic item, it does not increment my health. Do I assume correctly, that I need to use the In-play adjustments tab to add the source and the modifier?

Well, I'm pretty sure it should be modifying the health. If it's not, I believe that's a bug, unless there is a reason Colen knows about that I don't (or have forgotten). In the meantime, you can definitely use the In-Play adjustments for this purpose.

The Manual works by reading it. So it is technically possible for you to own one of the Manuals, but not get the benefit yet since you have not read it. It works for me using the In-play.
