Hmm. I guess that would be a pretty major shortcoming. Is there any
existing way to kind of fake that, like perhaps creating a basic
profile as a "parent", and creating the rest of the army list below
that?

I guess it would be roughly equivalent to, for example, the Chaos
Chosen entry in the 40k files. You'd add a "unit" to the list, and
adjust its stats using the Unit Options panel. You can then buy
attributes for the whole profile (the parent unit) via the wargear
menu.

Then, you'd check a box to add a unit, similar to adding an aspiring
champion.

Something like that might be a bit kludgy, and it would certainly be
more "bottom heavy" (as opposed to the regular operation of AB, where
much of the work goes into the top half of the screen), but at least
on a conceptual level it sounds possible.

Would something of that nature be workable from a practical point of
view?

This would be possible (messy, but possible) except for one thing - a list
item (e.g., a single unit in Army Builder) can only be a maximum of...
um... 12 or 15, I forget which, lines long - this is due to a bug in
Windows. So as a result, no unit can be bigger than 15 lines - any more
data than that just isn't shown. :(

The only way I can think of you being able to implement your scheme is to
have the player design the units, then save them (using the Save Unit
command under the Unit menu). You could then design one unit, load it
multiple times, and do any other customization that was needed at that
point. So your idea would work, it would just be a bit inconvenient.

Hope this helps,

Yeah, that does seem to be the way that it would have to go. Having a
user create a "unit" to be the basic profile, then cloning that over
and over again to make new units would work, and I'd be perfectly
okay with that being the way to do it, except that it wouldn't allow
them to modify the basic profile after they've started making units
with it. That'll reduce the tweakability of a list once it's gotten
underway.

All-in-all, I'd be okay with that, though. There are clear steps for
creating armies in the rulebook, and building an army that way in AB
would actually match those steps pretty well (since the rules
encourage you to go in pretty strict order for ease of use).

So, sounds like it would be workable, if not the best use of AB's
capabilities. Now I just need to gather some volunteers that want to
put the list together.

There is a limit of 16 lines to a unit, so unless the entire army will fit
into 16 lines that option is out.
