Wow. Being new to L5R, I had heard of the rich storyline, but had no idea they even released sets around it. But it does explain why I keep finding boxes full of just SCC Lion decks. An intriguing idea story wise, what was the circumstances of its failure? Also do storyline tourneys still go on?

Several.

1) As much as people complain about hard-to-find rares, they like them. They
drive sales. They give that feeling of Christmas when you finally get one.
RT was supposed to be about scarcity instead of rarity, but people lost that
"woo-hoo!" feeling with such small sets and relatively flat rarity.

2) RT tried to normalize cash flow. As it is, people spend big bucks every
three or four months. RT wanted to smooth that out so that you spend 1/3 the
cash every month along the comics model. Better for everyone. But people
refused to learn the new system, and ended up buying way too much of a small
release, and then getting upset. Also, other people never seemed to
understand that a release came out each month.

3) Small sets were inherently less interesting, as there were fewer cards
that increased the pool for your favorite faction.

4) Despite all our efforts, distribution of teh cards within displays and
also geographically wasn't the best.

> Also do storyline tourneys still go on?

Plenty.
