L5R and hero lab?

I really need to sit down with a human to show me how to do this stuff I mean WOW I have no clue at making this work, but I can type stuff down (it just all ends up getting deleted b/c I do it wrong) :(

We plan to do a number of training seminars this summer at GenCon that focus on the Authoring Kit for HL. If you will be attending GenCon, then I recommend you block out a few hours to make it to at least one of the seminars.

for me that's going to be tough as i live in Australia, any chance that us international users can have access to those seminars as well at some point?

I have started but not making it far, lots of real world work and a very strong ability to not understand how to code (I need to sit down and have someone show me how to do things I think) but I am putting in equipment, skills, not sure where to place advantages and disadvantages, have abilities in but not sure how to make the rings work from the abilities nor how to get the abilities in order of the character sheet, speaking of which not sure how to make the character sheet. I am trying to help with what I can once I have some files of info for people (not programing) I shall post em but I am working tons until mid May hard work low pay :( but I am happy!

I'm not sure how that would be accomplished. If someone wanted to record the seminars, we could make them available for download via our website. However, we won't have the ability to do that ourselves at GenCon. It's going to be rough enough being shorthanded in the booth while one of us is giving the seminar, so we can't afford to have yet another person out of the booth to do the recording. :-(

Oh god I suck at this, I need to have a brain transplant to make this into sense I understand or a video of step one to step 1000 on how to make rule sets happen, damn my mind for not taking any programing classes ever :(

Ok done whining for now back to base skills ect entering

Hey how would I make the split attributes for L5R system work in hero lab ie Stamina and willpower attributes create the Earth ring (the lower of the two stats is what the ring is equal to.

how does one make a character sheet for other systems?

how do I make more tabs in the editor, I only have abilities, armor, attributes, equipment, mechanic, melee weapons, race, ranged weapon, shield, skill
thanks for the help.

I don't know the L5R system, but if your earth ring is the lower of two attributes, that sounds like it's simply a derived attribute - there's a page in the savage worlds walkthrough specifically for derived. minimum(field[attrSta].value, field[attrWil].value) will get the minimum of two things. At the bottom of the savage worlds walkthrough is a page about modifying the editor. You may want to hold off on the character sheet until the system is almost complete - you'll have to change less about the character sheet that way.

In June I have some free time and I plan to go to Gen Con this year maybe stop at Origins for a day hopefully hitting adcon this weekend but still cant figure out how to work this lang. it has be befuddled every step forward is two back it seems.

We're going to be doing a number of seminars at GenCon that are focused at data file authors. So that might be a helpful resource for you to attend.

Also, the Savage Worlds Walk-through provides detailed examples of how to convert the Skeleton files into a fully-operational game system.

As Mathias pointed out, the ring values would be derived traits. All you'd need is a one-line script to calculate each ring, taking the minimum/maximum of the appropriate base attributes.

There are numerous examples in the walk-through about adding new tabs to the game system. For the Editor, each "editthing" element spawns its own tab in the Editor. However, the Editor stuff is probably the absolute *last* thing you should be working on.

Character sheets should also be done close to last, as Mathias pointed out. Get all the mechanics into place and working smoothly first. If you work on the character sheet earlier, you'll end up having to revise stuff in the character sheet as you modify the underlying mechanics.

any word yet if AEG has given the go ahead to an official L5R data file or do we have to rely on the authoring kit and the people who know how to use?

Well I would love to hear a yes to any part of this ! but I can only hope. I have started adding little parts but not rules I get lost every time I try it and break things, I am just not sure how or were to start. So its equipment for me til I go to gen con and have part of my brain upgraded to understand what to do.

Talks with AEG broke down due to what appeared to be a lack of resources on their end. They were spread really thin for awhile, so discussions about doing licensed L5R data files didn't make the priority cut of what to focus their limited manpower resources on. We have been up to our eyeballs on our end, so we haven't pursued it again. At this point, there's no way we'd be able to even start on L5R data files ourselves until sometime in 2010, so the Authoring Kit is probably the best avenue for L5R support.

Thank you for the information, I ll have to attend and event at Gen-Con that goes in detail on how to do this since I get no-where fast on my own :(
Any ideas which would be good to go to for AK help?

After you've read the wiki, ask here (well, new thread actually). Also, look back a few months in the threads in this forum - as I began work on the Cortex files, I described some of the thinking that went into organizing the files (admittedly, I never finished that wiki - after forgetting it for a week or two, bringing it back up to date would have taken a signifigant amount of time to do a good job. Since the Savage Worlds walkthrough already exists, I don't know if a second walkthrough is worth the time investment).

We'll be doing four different seminars at GenCon. Two are them are intended as indepth workshops for serious data file authors, and those are the ones you should absolutely attend. There is a beginner seminar and an advanced seminar, with the advanced seminar building on the one for beginners. They are being done on two separate days so you can digest the contents of one and be ready for the next.

However, your head will likely be spinning if you wait for the seminars to learn anything. I strongly recommend you review the walk-through on the wiki and familiarize yourself with as much material as you can before the seminars. It will maximize your ability to get the most out of the seminars.

I don't know the names of the seminars, but they should be pretty obvious if you find all seminar listings for us. The other two are clearly targeted at a different audience based on their names and descriptions.

Thank you both :)
I have signed up for the two seminars and plan on going (maybe even draging some friends to help with the notes) I shall look over the walk through and wiki again but they leave my brain numb :)
I am very hands on learner so I ll be there

Cya at Gen-Con

any chance those seminars will be available for download? i don't care if it's on youtube or on the web site.

I have no idea whether GenCon plans to record the seminars. We won't be able to lug all the necessary equipment ourselves, as we'll be flying to the show and not driving (we're in Silicon Valley).

If someone wants to volunteer to record the seminars, then I have no problems with doing so. Heck, I'd be willing to buy someone a badge if they'll handle all the recording details for all four seminars! :-)

Okay here is a question: IS there a way to convert the Rokugen files that are developed using the GNU system into HL files using XML?
http://linux.softpedia.com/get/GAMES-ENTERTAINMENT/RPG/Rokugen-4317.shtml

Rokugen is a Legend of the Five Rings Character Generator, written in Python/GTK+ and designed to run both in Win32 machines (Win2k and up) and GNU/Linux. It'll run on any computer that supports Python and has the GTK+ runtime.

Rokugen is free software and it's licensed under the GNU General Public License.

The name Rokugen derives obviously from Rokugan, the name of the Empire where the action of Legend of the Five Rings happens.

What's New in This Release:

· Kiho and Kata are available and working.
· Initial "free skills" can be used to increase ranks on other initial skills.
· The random name generator working (only 3 names right now).
· Minor bugfixes and code cleanups.

One word: Maybe. :-(

And in the best case scenario: Only partially.

To ascertain the answer to the above, we'll have to first spend awhile pulling apart how it work and figuring out how it's data is structured. That will require a meaningful chunk of time and we're currently in crunch mode leading up to GenCon. So we don't have the ability to research the answer for you right now.

More importantly, conversion could only apply to the *DATA*. By data, I mean all the skills, abilities, weapons, etc. All of the actual *MECHANICS* will need to be re-implemented within Hero Lab. So you will first need to develop all of those mechanics and have them working smoothly in HL. Once that's done, then it becomes possible to write a conversion program, but that all depends on how usable the data is in the Rokugen tool.
