How to maintain dual inventories

Hello.

I'm a collector and a player, so I'd like some way of being able to record
my card inventory by which I'll be able to differentiate between those
cards in my collection, and those in my play box.

My first thought was to use something like "card quality" to separate the
inventories, however I'd also like to be able to really differentiate
quality too.

Also, how does one note signed cards vs regular cards...

Thanks in advance,

R.

For which game system?
you do mean cards autographed by the artist, correct?

If so, a new style has to be added to each card. you should contact the
datafile author about this.

Given that any card can be signed, would it be worth just adding a "signed"
inventory slot, or are people actually going to track condition of signed
cards?

This is going to get ugly for the larger systems if we double the inventory
count to add a ", signed" entry for every card.

Yeah, I won't get any more detailed than that I expect.

Hmmm, they are just going to love me.

Looks like I'll be having to maintain my own set of datafiles. Bugger.

I'd like to track condition as well, because if I have a poor signed card
I'd certainly
like to replace it, and knowing that a card needs replacing will be vital
in that instance.

Maybe Rob will have a brilliant answer for me/us?

:)

It's not that big of a deal since the user can display only the styles
they want to see.

Inventory Management -> Settings -> Restrict Styles

I have autographed as a style for the cards in the WarCry datafiles.

Can't you create a dual inventory by importing the data files into two
separate directories? Then one set could be your signed cards...

So I guess I could add "autographed" and "autographed, foil" as styles.

I don't know if I'd want to for DBZ. I think I already have 6 separate
styles already. I'd have to go up to at least 12 then.

For B5, there are official signed cards (well, signed and stamped) that
I really should keep track of. For that matter, some have different pen
colors -- should I keep track of stamped and signed with a black pen and
signed with a blue pen? (I'm thinking not.) Beyond that, there are the
ones that have been just autographed in the regular ad-hoc manner. Since
any card can become a signed card, having each data author do this
seperately is a hassle.

you may want to enter those cards as a different set (promos).

The easiest solution that I can think of is to maintain the collection as a
completely separate entity. When you import data files, you can specify the
folder to put them in. So, import each set of data files twice. One set is
used exclusively for tracking your collection, with the other used for your
"play box". The latter is the one you would build decks against, since
you'll only play with those cards.

If you do this, you'll see two entries for every game system in the "Select
Game System" list. The second column will indicate the folder where the
files are installed. If you establish a convention for naming the
collection set specially, you can ensure that the collection set is always
the first/second one in the list, making it easy to use in a consistent
fashion.

Hope this helps,
Rob

Then make sure to include info about this in the FAQ. Some of you experts
are doing stuff that is really cool, except that most users don't bother
reading anything and WE end up having to answer their support quesitons
repeatedly. If you put the answers in the FAQ, then we can simply respond
with "You'll find this in the FAQ, which can be accessed...". Hopefully,
the user will actually bother to read the REST of the FAQ entries when he
looks for the answer to the first one, eliminating the repeat questions
from users who can't be bothered to read the provided documentation but CAN
be bothered to wait a couple days until we can get back to them with the
answer. Argh....

Thanks, Rob

Sorry. I added it to the FAQ for the next release. Could an option be
provided for Authors to have the FAQ automatically display when new
datafiles are imported?

That's what the release notes mechanism is used for. The release notes
always are shown when a new update is loaded the first time.

Since the FAQ is a webpage that launches a separate application (the
browser), it would be inappropriate to launch it automatically. That needs
to be done solely in response to user invocation. So the release notes are
the ideal mechanism.

ok. that makes more sense.
