How do you choose use spells in a lower level slot without a Validation error?

Say I want to memorize a 3rd level spell in a 4th level slot. Right now I get two validation errors (too many 3rd, too few 4th).

Is there a work around besides add +1 Spell Known @ 2nd level and -1 Spell Known @ 3rd level spell Adjustment?

I'm afraid I will forget that I did this (play weekly), and thus gimp my character unnecessarily.
