get a topics tab like that shown in the second screen shot on the kickstarter page. Where it starts as a region in the region category but each topic acts as its own subcategory to but other types of topics in.< screen scot just above Key Feature heading and marked flexible organization>
 
Click the crossed-hammer-and-wrench icon on the "Story Almanac" tab and then click "Show Nested Hierarchy". However, in order for things to nest up like that you need to make sure you set up your "Containing Topic" for each thing. So if you wanted to have a Merchant show up under his Shop then on the Merchant Individual on the right-hand sidebar you'd need to press the + next to "Containing Topic" and select the Shop Location to contain him. Then he'll show up under the Shop when you have "Show Nested Hierarchy" checked.
 
Those are done through 'containing topics'. When you're on a topic, look at the right column. Where it says "Containing Topics", click the + sign and choose the topic you want it to be contained underneath.

Then, make sure on the left column, you click the tools drop-down and select "Show Nested Hierarchy". That'll show you the topics all sorted with respect to what topics they're grouped under.
