House Rule - Max bonus to skills

Sable

New member
Just starting to get into HL, but I think I'm trying to run before I can walk with this one.

I'm experimenting with trying to code a house rule where characters are limited to the amount of bonus' to skills they can receive from magic items and spells by the number of ranks they have in that skill or 5, whichever is higher. (came from a high level game where people with 1 or no ranks in a skill being able to get higher than max skilled people without access to items).

Any tips people would like to share?

If I'm understanding your request correctly, there isn't a way to do this, because there is no way to tell if a given bonus is from an item, a racial ability, a class ability, or some combination of those.

Hi, having poked for a while, I suspect Aaron is correct.

The aim is stop people piling on a load of skill enhancement kit/buffs and basically being better than a character who has spec'd in that area but for whatever reason has no access to the kit.

Therefore, if you put on/cast something that gave you a +30 comp bonus to bluff, you wouldn't pretty much be automatically better than someone who had maxed out their sense motive, as only your ranks in bluff (or 5 whichever is higher) would be added.

If there are classes/feats (am new to PF so haven't read up on every class in detail yet), that give Comp and insight bonus' (those being the most common magical bonus' from what I can see) then I can see this being very difficult otherwise it might be as simple as capping those bonus types, if you can't choose to cap just "Gear" and "effects/magic"

What you could do in that case is setup a Mechanic with a script that runs at late timing. You will have to play around to test but you would want to run just before the "Total" for skills scripts run and I have no idea when that is. Could be Post-Attributes or very early in Final. You would have to do some trial and error here.

Then you would have to loop through all skills and reset the Max on those bonus fields to say 5. The script would look something like this:

Code:
~ Loop through all skills on the hero
foreach pick in hero from BaseSkill
~ Limit the bonus to be 5 or the value present
     eachpick.field[BonComp].value += minimum(eachpick.field[BonComp].value,5)
~ Limit the bonus to be 5 or the value present
     eachpick.field[BonInsight].value += minimum(eachpick.field[BonInsight].value,5)
nexteach

Like often I am not near HL to test the above and any issues found are their for not my fault. :D

That's brilliant, thanks!

Will play and feed back when I have something. Timing is, hopefully, the steer I needed :D
