Hey, What Happened to My .user Files?

Maidhc O Casain

Well-known member
I just installed the latest update and now I get a LOT of errors, all of which seem to be generated by my custom .user files.

In the 'Blue Screen' phase (loading the program, but not a specific portfolio) I get the following:

The data files could not be loaded due to errors. Hero Lab will now attempt to load them in recovery mode. Once loaded, you can access the editor as normal to correct any errors.

The following errors occurred:

File: MCP Races.user (line 367) - Thing - Duplicate record encountered ('rcPFTAb058')

During the load of specific portfolios, I get variations of the following:

Errors were encountered when loading the saved portfolio! A record of these errors can be found in the file "C:\Users\Mike\AppData\Local\Temp\hero_lab_load_issues.log". If you notice incorrect behaviors in your portfolio, please report it to the data file authors (you can contact them from the Help menu).

Note! Due to intentional changes to the data files since the loaded file was saved, certain error messages may be expected, as outlined below. If one of these errors occurs, it does not represent a loading problem unless specified as such.

Hellknight characters from Pathfinder 27 will lose their Hellknight levels by default when loaded (as the Hellknight class was replaced in the Inner Sea World Guide). If you want to continue using your old Hellknights, see the Data File FAQ on the Help menu, and check the 'How can I get the old Hellknight back?' section. Example error:
Pick 'cHellknigh' has been orphaned due to missing thing in batch '383'

One or more required sources are not accessible for hero 'Gerlari Hiltzaile'. Subsequent errors may be the result of this problem.
Critical information not found in data files: Source Volume 'MCPEquip'
Critical information not found in data files: Source Volume 'MCPFeat'
Critical information not found in data files: Source Volume 'MCPRaces'
Critical information not found in data files: Source Volume 'MCPSpells'
Pick 'spMCPCltrp' has been orphaned due to missing thing in batch '219'
Pick 'spMCPLnBlt' has been orphaned due to missing thing in batch '220'

The specific errors in the latter change depending on the portfolio I'm loading, but the gist is always the same.

When I go ahead and finish the load, none of my custom material is available.

The first sounds similar to when I've made submissions to Wolf Lair of new modules and they've then incorporated them into the main corpus. I don't suppose your .user files involved such material that might have come in as an update?

I agree with duggan. A few of my portfolios displayed errors after updates, however just resaving them got rid of the messages. Once I'd done that I looked them over to see what was missing and just re added any absent info.

The first error does indeed suggest that custom stuff is now incorporated in the official core data therefore rendering the user file redundant!

That ability naming pattern looks like one of the Tiefling abilities - if you created ability #58 from Pathfinder #25 and matched the Id pattern that was used in the abilities I created, all of the Tiefling abilities from Pathfinder #25 are now available in Hero Lab, and that would cause this duplicate error.

Once Hero Lab finds that it can't load some of the user content, it goes into safe mode - not loading any user content, so that you can use the editor to fix the problem you've run into.

In the meantime, if you load a portfolio that has user content, Hero Lab won't be able to find it - for the portfolio you've loaded, it's not finding 4 user-added sources, and it's not finding 2 specific picks that it expects to find.

Once you've removed the item that's causing the duplication, exit the editor, press ctrl-r to quick-reload Hero Lab's files, and your user files should function again.

Worked perfectly, thanks Matthias!

(And a BIG thanks for getting all of those variant Tiefling abilities added in - I know I've been bugging you for a while about that!)

Just a clarification for anyone else having this problem, because I didn't understand the first time I read it:

One redundancy will cause Hero Lab to not recognize *any* of your .user files.

In my case, I had a data set with the 3.5 Spell Compendium converted for PFRPG, and since the Inner World Guide has a Dragon Domain, the two were conflicting. Hero Lab refused to let me use all nine of my .user files.

Fixed that one thing, and they all came back!

The same thing just happened to me. It was working fine this morning, and now it won't recognize ANY of my user files...

OK, I went and moved my Dragonborn file out of the main folder, and now everything is back.. so weird...
