Another update to HL has been released. This new version includes a number of important bug fixes (some causing crashes), so please be sure to retrieve it ASAP. In addition, V3.4b marks the official release of Changeling for World of Darkness. The Changeling content is included for free with the WoD package, so you now have both Vampire and Changeling in one bundled option.

May the dice be with you....

Automatic downloader is not working correctly. It closes the program but does not begin the installation process. I went to the website, downloaded and installed it fine though.

I am running Vista on this laptop.

That's an issue due to Vista being stupid. We *think* we've found a workaround that is now included in V3.4b, so this problem will hopefully be gone once users update to V3.4b.

What's going on is that Vista is being asked to launch the installer and you don't have the necessary privileges. When this happens, Vista *should* be prompting you to authorize running the program, but it's choosing not to do so. The net result is that HL tells Vista to launch the installer that you just downloaded and Vista simply ignores it.

The solution is to launch HL with Administrator privileges. This is done by right-clicking on the shortcut icon you normally use to launch HL and selecting "Run as Administrator". Then everything will work, because you've given HL the necessary privileges to launch the new installer.

Keep your fingers crossed that the workaround in V3.4b will eliminate this issue in the future. :-)

Thanks for all the support you guys offer.

I installed HL 3.4b and I am having troubles with my portfolios. I loaded the update twice. The first time, it seemed to delete my existing portfolio data files. I made a test portfolio, and then installed the update again. The second time, it deleted the entire portfolio folder.

Am I doing something wrong?

I installed it the first

This makes no sense. Did you simply install the update? Or did you first uninstall it? If the latter, then I guess it's possible stuff got deleted, but the uninstall should only delete files that were created during installation. All the data files and download and portfolios you create should remain behind.

Another possibility is that you installed HL to a different folder? If you installed to a different folder, then your original portfolios will be lurking in the sub-folder beneath the original location where you installed HL.

If you are using a different user account, that could also explain it. Did you save your portfolios under the "My Documents" folder (or somewhere else that is unique to each user)? If so, then switching user accounts will result in a different "My Documents" folder (and any other user-specific location).

That's all I can think of right now to explain this.

I just click the intro screen buttons when it offered to update. Same as I've always done. Didn't select a new folder for installation. Didn't uninstall anything. It did mention that I had to obtain a new keyfile and unlocks the new version. I let the default license number ride and clicked ok. I appreciate your assistance.

Would it help if I sent the install.txt file?

I just did it again. I physically added the pathfinder portfolio folder. Added a data file for 'testdude'. I then ran the PF 1.5 update which added the barbarian cleric test character. I then re-ran the HL 3.4b update. The Pathfinder portfolio folder and both of the portfolio I mentioned above are gone!

It seems this problem only occurs for some users and not for others. It definitely doesn't occur on my system, which is where all the installer testing is done, so that's why it slipped through. :-(

Although we don't know *why* the problem is occurring (it shouldn't), we've identified the logic in the installer that is responsible for the problem and removed it. We're in final testing of a new bug fix release that also addresses a few other issues, so this should be sorted by sometime tonight.

Thanks for your patience....
