Hero Lab questions

Hello all,

I was on the hunt for a super hero system, found the Humble Bundle, and jumped on it. I am planning to run a game in a couple months after finishing up a current D&D campaign.

The bundle came with the PDFs but also came with a bunch of other files. Most of these are "xyz_hero_labs_files.zip" and "charactername.por". From my reading around these are for Hero Lab Classic. I have downloaded the demo to see what it can all do. I have two questions and hope this is the right /r to be asking them.

1. Am I right to assume that I would need to purchase Hero Lab Classic ($10), plus the M&M 3rd ed add on ($25), and then the content I have purchased through Humble Bundle/Drive Through RPG can be added manually via those zip folders and .por files without having more purchases within Hero Lab? If so this feels worth it as an easy digital way to use my purchased content. If more licenses are required to be purchased to use them in Hero Lab I would likely skip it.

2. Have other GMs found the tools in Hero Lab useful? I have browsed through the demo a bit and I like the idea of making my PCs using it so that it helps me make sure we are within the rules as well as the GM tools do look useful for a first time GM using this system. That said, I normally use pen and paper for this stuff in D&D so just using the books wouldn't be a big worry either.

Thanks!

HL Classic is great for creating PC's in a number of games. I've been using it for years for d20, Pathfinder, Call of Cthulhu, Star Wars d6, & Conan d20. You can do nearly anything with the demo (and the basic core rules) that you can with a paid package, except print and save. Of course, you need to buy books (packages) within HL for particular games or you can't see/use a lot of that material. Try it for a while to see if you think its worthwhile before you buy anything. You can download Community Files for most systems that add stuff from 3rd party publishers, and house-rules, or simply stuff that wasn't part of the license that LW has for a system, or hasn't been made into a package.
You can also use the editor to create your own stuff, or modify existing material.
Check out https://www.wolflair.com/ and the STORE to see costs and packages. You must buy ONE base game system with the HL software ($25) - you DO NOT need the $10 License enhancement. The add-on packs (like "M&M Ultimate Power and Masterminds Manual" and "M&M3 Gadget Guides"), but you might have some of those with the files you got in the Humble Bundle. The por file is a Character/Hero file with pre-generated Heroes. You might be able to unzip and install the zip files you have with the Demo version.
Also check this part of the Forum for M&M posts and updates.
Have fun and don't be afraid to ask questions!
