Hero Lab First-Timer!

I'm creating a gnome druid and it's my first time creating a character. However, I'm getting +2 to melee and +3 on ranged to hit and I'm not sure why! Why is Hero Lab calculating this in to my scimitar, scythe, and sling?

Also, does the Player Companion Races #1 package include anything to do with the Wonderseekers?

Thank you!

If you can't attach the portfolio file, can you tell us more about the character? Ability scores, feats, traits, anything else that might be pertinent.

The printed statblock would be the easiest to have HL produce and would give all the info.

My guess without any information is that the Gnome is small and is giving you a +1 to hit. But otherwise way more info about your character is needed to track down why something is happening.

A 2nd level Druid has a +1 BAB. Your Dexterity bonus adds +1 to your range attack. Your size (small because you are a gnome) adds an additional +1 to all attacks. Therefore, +2 to melee and +3 to range is correct.

Thank you so much!! It was really confusing me and my gamemates.

Do you know where in any of the books it might explain this bonus? I wonder why I would hit harder if I'm smaller!?

Your not hitting harder your hitting easier. Don't you think its easier to use a baseball bat to hit a building then it is to hit a baseball? Also larger creatures like Ogres get a negative to hit actually combined with the gnomes AC bonus its like getting +2AC bonus when fighting a ogre or any large creature.

In this case the easiest place to find the rule is under the Gnome stats.

Size: Gnomes are Small creatures and thus gain a +1 size bonus to their AC, a +1 size bonus on attack rolls, a –1 penalty to their Combat Maneuver Bonus and Combat Maneuver Defense, and a +4 size bonus on Stealth checks.

Also, why +3 to Range -- shouldn't it just be +2 with the Dex and gnome/small bonus?
Your BAB (Base Attack Bonus) is +1 from being a level 2 druid. So +1 BAB +1 Dex +1 Size = +3 on ranged attacks.

Okay, I have one more for you guys...

As a gnome druid I get the obsessive bonus which adds +2 racial bonus to a craft or profession. I chose a profession (alchemy) and using improvised tools, I got a -2 penalty, so my skill was at -2. Once I got the proper tools (+2) the skill went up to “0”. My boyfriend says that it should go up to +2 because I don't have to take the improvised tool penalty of -2 and the tools themselves provide a +2 modifier, and thus when you get the proper tools it should be +2 and not -2 + 2 = 0. This sounds kind of confusing but, can anybody explain to us what’s going on?

As your talking about tools I think you mean "Craft (Alchemy)" I assume as profession doesn't get tools that I recall.

Guessing a little as I can't see your full character but it sounds like its a confusion between Tools and Masterwork Tools. Normal Artisan tools remove the -2 penalty so you go from -2 to 0. Masterwork Artisan Tools provide a an additional +2 bonus on top of removing the penalty.

So the question is did you buy Artisan Tools or Masterwork Artisan Tools?

PFSRD said:
Artisan Tools: These special tools include the items needed to pursue any single craft. Without them, you have to use improvised tools (–2 penalty on Craft checks), if you can do the job at all.

Masterwork Artisan's Tools: These tools serve the same purpose as artisan's tools, but masterwork artisan's tools are the perfect tools for the job, so you get a +2 circumstance bonus on Craft checks made with them.

Ah, sorry! I made this more confusing than I should have. I’m actually doing Craft (apothecary), which is in the “other” category but the DM said I could do it. He also said that if I buy tools, it gives me +2 to the skill, but we never discussed whether they were Artisan Tools or Masterwork Artisan Tools. Here’s my full character file:

My boyfriend thinks my craft should +8 with everything factored in (+2 tools, +3 adding 1 rank to the skill, +2 from obsessive, and +1 with the intelligence modifier), but it’s +9 now with Masterwork tools factored in. This is where we’re stuck! He thinks the program is leveling us at +4 per rank in a class skill but our DM and other PC’s say that we level at +3 per rank.

Thank you so much for all your help. These seem like really tedious questions.

Class skills get a +3 bonus on top of the ranks in the skill. It's not +3 for the first rank you put in. It's ranks + 3

So:

+2 tools, +1 rank, +3 class skill, +2 obsessive, +1 INT

Think of it this way. If you have tools, you do not have penalties (0), if you do not have tools then you have penalties (-2). If you get MW tools, you get a bonus (+2).

What he is trying to tell you is that the normal tools remove the penalty AND applies a bonus. This is not the correct way that it works.

Does that help clarify it?
