Help Power Loss and RW is messed up

RampagingHoardes

Well-known member
I had a total power loss at my house right in the middle of running realm works and now when I try to save after editing a topic I am getting the attached error message.

I backed up the database this morning and synched before starting but I don't want to lose everything I did today. Am I screwed?

Wasn't sure if I should report a bug as I am not certain it is one.

IS this an Apache Lucene index file? If so should I just rebuild the index? Not sure if I should do that yet as I absolutely do not want to lose any data if that is possible and you may want to do something else.

Will be in and out tomorrow until the evening I will try and check back tonight and when I get up tomorrow. After that It may be late afternoon.

Your data should be fine. That error indicates the full-text search index got corrupted when the power went out. After loading your realm, switch to the Manage ribbon bar at the top. Then click on the Rebuild Index button in the ribbon bar. Once the index is rebuilt, you should be good to go.

You might consider investing in an Uninterruptible Power Supply (or UPS). They are a life-saver when the power goes out. You at least get a few minutes to save everything and power off properly. No data gets lost, and you also don't have to worry about the potential implications on the hardware that certain types of power issues can trigger (e.g. brown-outs and fluctuations just before an outage occurs).

Thanks for replying this late Rob that was really great of you. Will look into an uninterrupted supply as soon as I can swing it. Will let you know if I have any further probs.

thanks again

I've got UPSes hooked up to my main computer and our house file server; both are connected to their computer and the computer is set to safely power down after a short amount of time on battery. Well worth their cost for your desktops and towers.

Another voice in support of UPS in case of power outages. Got both PCs and a NAS drive hooked to one, and the peace of mind knowing that a power failure won't cause data loss is well worth the price.

same here.... and the nce thing about most of them is that most of them can also safely shutdown the computer if you're like me and leave your computer up all the time, so even if the power outage happens when you are away, everything will be fine.

+10 to ups
The first time you have to rework a file you have spent hours, days or weeks working on you will either thank yourself or kick yourself depending on the decision to buy vs not.
:-)

Unfortunately they are pretty expensive and I have limited income.
Something to consider for the future, then. You don't have to go all out with these things; there are decent ones in the $50-$100 range that will be enough to get through short power blips safely and still give your computer time to shut down when needed.

The other bonus of a UPS is that it gives constant clean power to your PC. Modern PC's can easily be affected by dirty power which can cause all sorts of strange issues.

UPS's are pretty mandatory on high end gaming rigs as they are often being overclocked.

UPSes that give actual clean power (not just a square wave) are very expensive. Still, if your area has bad power any UPS can be a huge improvement.

I don't understand why people waste their money building "high end gaming rigs"; nowadays you can build a decent game playing computer for what you'd pay for just one of the 2-4 video cards in the expensive machine. But whatever, if they enjoy it then more power to them. (Literally! :)

More importantly, I doubt the majority of users are going to use a high-end overclocked water-cooled gaming rig to type their campaign data into Realm Works. You just don't need that sort of power for RW.

Gaming alone? agree. But a lot of people ave them for other Purposes. My hi end gaming rig is actually used for business purposes - video editing. Water cooling is actually quite cheap these days if you go with self contained units. More importantly though, people spend lts of money to back up their files, I don't get why not spend a little bit of money keeping the computer in good repair. A UPS will often add years of life to even a midrange computer.

Thanks for the good laugh! :D Your "decent" computer is going to be running on "low" settings for any good games just to be playable. This comment is same as a person telling me that they have a V6 car with 250HP and "how" powerful it is. LOL  :p

There's a big difference between wanting improved performance for business purposes and wanting higher benchmark numbers solely to brag about having higher benchmark numbers. The latter is what bugs me.

I was speaking about bang for your buck, not power. I fully admit they're not as powerful but they handle everything we want to do with them just fine, including playing games on the LAN.

In any case, I'm sorry for complaining about a pet peeve of mine and derailing this thread even further.
