That's about it... if you check on page 5 of the SM codex is says
something to the effect of "upgrades normally available to the squad are
not available to the sgt". Yes, we know Paul Sawyer did it in a battle
report; no, it does not set a precedent. Also, if you were to check the
FAQ for the 40k files (Help/Warhammer 40,000 FAQ), under "Why can't
Scout Sergeants take Sniper Rifles?" it also answers the question.

Hello All,
Am new to the group and just don't have the time to scan through the
entire archive to see if my question has already been answered.
It pretains to Warhammer 40K.
In the Army Builder program you are able to get Scout Squads. For
these Scouts Squads you are able to purchase upgrades to Sniper
Rifles for five points a piece. For any model in the squad. Least
that is what the codex for Space Marines states.
However, in the Army Builder program, you can not get a sniper rifle
for the sergeant of the Scout Squad. I am having an army validation
conflict when I go to save or print out the roster.
How do I fix this, short of not upgrading the sergeant to a sniper
rifle.

This is in the FAQ for the files, but you're new so here goes anyway. You
can't give the sergeant a sniper rifle. No really. Check out page 5 of
codex space marines under Options, in Army List Entries.

You don't. The reason that you get this validation error is that the
Sergeant CANOT carry a sniper rifle. Colin, should this be added to the
40K FAQ?

I believe its one of the first things mentioned in the FAQ...

You can give a Sergeant a Sniper Rifle. It says ANY MODEL in the codex.
I will look at the FAQ though I didn't see it on the first read.

Ok, read where it says to add more, add extra, etc. But all those do is add
addition memebers to the squad.
The SPACE MARINE CODEX, on page 10, middle of the page, under SCOUT SQUAD
states that...
Options: Any model in the squad may replace their bolt pistol and close
combat weapon with a sniper rifle at +5 pts, or a bolter or shotgun at no
additional points cost.
You CAN NOT do this with AB so far as I have seen.

Codex:Space Marines, page 5.

Easy - you just understand the rule that disallows sergeants from having
weapon upgrades as per page 5 of C:SM

It's in the FAQ, in the first section I believe. *sigh

This is why I have the large, moderately rude "ATTENTION" banner when
you start the files. It has helped, thankfully, but not enough :/

Incidentally, this is one of the reasons why I like this list - most
people ask this question here, where I don't have to answer it because
someone else sees it first. Thanks chaps :)

Still had not gotten the anwswer from the FAQ. That seemed only to deal with
squad sizes. Took being told where to look in the codex to clairfiy why you
were unable to get the sniper rifle for the sergeant.

And on Page 5, it says:

"If the squad is allowed to have models with upgraded weaponry (ie heavy
weapons, plasma guns, etc) then these may only be taken by ordinary squad
members, not the Sergeant."

That's why we tell people to read the ENTIRE Codex. I'm having the
same argument with a person on Portent...

Hmmm, seems I had already stated that I had found that. Pointed out to me by

Have read the entire codex. Just didn't remember that part.

Sometimes it takes awhile for some members of the list to get updated, so
you'll usually get 5+ answers to the same question. You'll get used to it :)

Anyway, just to make sure you are looking at the right FAQ, its the 40k Army
Builder FAQ under "Help" in the toolbar of Army Builder (not the GW Faq) that
was what everyone was talking about. See ya!

That FAQ was where I looked. But didn't find the help I needed. All that the
prog would let me do was to add more members to the squad. Looking it up in
the codex (something I should have remembered actually) is what pointed me
in the right direction.

But thanks Fred and the rest of you.

Can you tell this is a sore subject with everyone? It's normally not
so bad, the sniper rifle for the scout sgt. is just a touchy item. It
has sparked many arguments (hence the FAQ beginning "For 13 months
now......).

I would recommend not asking about the paired lightning claws/bike
combo....I have seen that get ugly too. :)

Overall there is fabulous info on this list and Colin is extremely
responsive to questions/suggestions on Army Builder (at least as long
as the "Real World" doesn't get to him), so don't get discouraged and
keep the questions/input flowing. It helps those of us that haven't
been around for eons (just kidding guys....really).
