Okay, I've been reading a couple of threads on subject relationship
and I feel like a total n00b. I see the complex things you guyz are
using this relationship for and I can't get it to do the simplest
interpretation.

Assume "MY" is my race prefix.
Assume "Squd" is the abbr for my composition group.

I have SquadA. I've given them External Attribute of "foll:MY-
type=MyLead".

I have Individual LeadA. I've given him External Attribute
of "lead:any-Squd".

There are no further complications. I have no rules to be enforced
yet...just this simple relationship. I get no errors. And yet, when
I bring up AB and click on "Select Leader" I get "There is no Leader
available for Selection.

What am I missing?

I could just make it a Unit upgrade, similar to 40K Vet Sgt, but I
want the 'upgrade' to actually be a leader, not appear at the bottom
of the unit entry.

Is this what the Foll/Lead relationship will accomplish, assuming I
can make it work?

Thanks in advance for helping out an apparently simple person.

By adding the -type line you are saying only units of type "MyLead" can be
leaders for this unit. If your LeadA squad has not been given
"type:MyLead" then he won't show up for their list. Give him the
"type:MyLead" and it should work.

Thanks for replying, Mr. Green, but that's not it.

LeadA was already type "MyLead", but I added the Local Attribute as you
suggested and no difference.

Is there something I have to define in advance in the datadef maybe?

Nope, datadef doesn't matter. I just tried some test units in the
Warhammer v6 files (fresh units without anything on them) and it worked
fine.

The Follower unit had this external attribute:
foll:em-type=MyLead

where em is the race

And the Leader had this external attribute:
lead:any-Rare

The Leader was defined type "MyLead".

In AB, I added both units to the roster and the follower unit was able to
check 'select general' and could select the leader unit from the list.

I'd check to make sure your spelling including capitalization of the type
is correct in both the foll attribute and the leader's definition and also
that the composition group is correct (look under the View | File
Definition Info menu to double check).

I just figured it out. There's nothing wrong with your datafile, you're
simply misunderstanding the use of the foll/lead attributes. When a
follower unit requires a leader, it must select a leader from available
leaders that are already a part of the army. So you have to add a leader
unit to your roster that satisfies the type definition before it will show
up in the list when you go to select a leader. If you have no leader
units already in the roster, you won't have any available to select. ;)

I think what you probably want to do instead (correct me if I'm wrong) is
either add an option that will attach a leader unit as a child to the main
unit (using the unit: attribute) or that will present the user with a list
of available units to attach as a child unit (using the list: attribute)

Eureka.

You tipped me onto the problem...totally my bad...when you typed "...I added
both units to the roster...". I assumed the "Leader" function worked like
the Option:Special Attribute "Unit". Giving me a popup list to choose from.
Didn't realize the "Leader" target had to already be in the roster.

Thanks for your help, Mark. I really like what you've done with the WF
files, I'll be using them as a guide whenever appropriate.

You know the worst part? After all this, the function doesn't do what I
want it to do anyway.

What I want - Click on the "Option" type button. Select the "Leader" type
from a popup. The "Leader" unit then becomes part of the follower group, at
the top of the group entry. But no worries, there is too little ROI on this
effort so I am going to leave it as an upgrade, with the newly attached
"Leader" being at the bottom of the group's entry. No biggie.

Thanks again.

Hiya Mark.

Sorry if I'm being a pest, but this is my first attempt at building data
files (as opposed to modifying someone else's).

I'll give you a little background - I'm the official AB guy for the new game
Dark Age. For the most part, I've had no problems with this, I've got a
long history of programming, so a lot of the conventions make sense to me.

But, now I'm having another problem with this relationship that I'm trying
to enforce.

Okay, as in the previously described scenario,

UnitA has the option of having LeadA as a "Leader". (I've given up using
the foll/lead functionality, it is now a unit upgrade).
This works well enough.

However, LeadA may also be taken as an Individual in the force.
No problems with enforcing the points limitation (only 1 LeadA per 500 pts).

But...when LeadA is taken as an individual, he has the "Command" option and
the "Buff" option. And Notes "This guy has command.".

When taken as a "Leader" for UnitA, he loses the "Command" option, keeps the
"Buff" option and Notes should now read "This guy loses command as a
leader."

My first thought was to make an identical unit to LeadA, and take away the
"Command" option and new Notes, but then the points limitation does not get
enforced correctly. Argh.

Any further help you could provide would be appreciated. I've given myself
a deadline of end-of-today to finish the data files and I am so nearly
there.

Cheers.

Use the same unit, but the command option should have an attribute something along the lines of preq:no, which prevents the option from being selected if the unit has a parent.

Cheers,
