Familiars

Hi,

I have made a witch with a familiar, but it is asking for me to give it a feat to validate the sheet. Is that right? i don't think familiar should have feats or am i wrong?

regards,

apoc

I noticed that too when I created my Homunculus, I had built it with a few more HD and it's asking for a feat and some skill points to validate. So I have the same question as you.

Question: On the familiar's master, is the 'Don't Restrict Companion Race' checkbox checked in the 'Configure the Hero' prompt?

Are the familiars you're asking about something that was mindless before it became a familiar, like a vermin or a construct? Normal animals get their normal feats, even when they become a familiar (and if you don't like the allocation that Paizo set up in the Bestiary, you can check the customize button next to where you select the familiar's race), but vermin familiars lose mindless when they become a familiar, meaning they're no longer forbidden from gaining feats and skill ranks from their hit dice.

Hi Mathias, that makes sense for familiars but I noticed my construct/Homunculus has the same situation. It's in the Mount/Hirelings part of Herolab, so I guess Mounts/Hirelings can be leveled?

The Homunculus as listed in the Bestiary is missing half of its skill point allocation, and as you add Hit Dice to any creature, it'll gain feats and skill points. Unlike most constructs, Homunculi aren't mindless, so they gain feats and skills normally.

Remember to check the Bestiary entry for Homunculus rules (pg 176) - the description text from the Bestiary isn't included in Hero lab. There's no rule that you can't make an Improved Familiar out of a higher-HD, although I'd forbid it if I were GMing.

Ask your GM how much more you should be paying for any improvements in a construct you've purchased. Some of the races have rules for that in their Bestiary entries, and UM's chapter 2 has some guidelines on what can be done and what it costs.

My familiar is a drain spider created at the same time as my Witch.

I am playing Pathfinder Society if that makes any difference, i am really new to PF and RP games in general so not too clued up on all the rules and restrictions yet.

**EDIT - Don't restrict companion is not selected.

There is a thread on the Paizo messageboards about familiars not gaining feats as their HD increase. I guess I am as confused as apoca6. Any further clarification?
