External Hard Drive

Hi Everyone,

This may seem like an ignorant question, but it is one that is on my mind.

I tend to go around to many different computers. In my house there are two, plus a laptop, and I often travel to my parent's and in-laws houses. I have my hero lab on a desktop so travelling with that is not an option.

Would it be possible to install Hero Lab on an external hard drive and then take it with me that way? Or is the license linked somehow to the computer and not the storage device?

The license is locked to a computer actually so when you connect it up to the new computer the license will put you back into un-licensed mode.

You have to be careful because if you renew the license on the other computer. As your allowed to transfer a license to a new computer every 120 days so it would transfer it during the renew license part.

If you have a laptop why not just put one of your licenses on the main computer and your free 2nd license on your laptop. Then just bring the laptop with you instead of the drive.
 
For the laptop idea it is because it is a business laptop so:

A) I can't install anything on it myself;

and

B) if I could, then I wouldn't be able to update it.

Now, what about this idea. I have thought about making it so that I can boot to my external hard drive. Would this be an option? The OS and software would run through the hard drive. Or is the license linked to something outside of the OS?
 
Hi tcharleschapman,

You could install Hero Lab onto an external drive, but if you moved that drive to a new computer, Hero Lab would require you to transfer its license to that new computer. As long as you're only running it on one computer, you should be fine running it off an external drive.

If you want to use Hero Lab on more than one computer, you can do so by acquiring secondary licenses for each other computer you want it on. See the "Running Hero Lab on Multiple Computers" section of our web site for details.

Have you considered setting up remote desktop to your home pc. That way you don't have to have an external drive.
