Exporting Text

The more I dig into RW, the more I like it. It's great for organization purposes. However, I'm also a graphic designer and like to construct campaign handbooks for my players. I have already discovered that there is no way to print (that really needs to be added, btw). Is there some way to export text other than laboriously copy/pasting from dozens of data fields?

Use voice recognition software to read it into another program?

Seriously, though, a print feature is on the list. At first, it wasn't viewed by LWD as important, but with as many people as have requested it, it's been given a higher priority. That ambiguous piece of information is all I have.

They're working on the cloud marketplace and player view first. After that, I'm not sure how they're prioritizing things.

The feature request for printing is here, if you want to add your voice to it:

Actually, I'm asking about exporting text. Don't get me wrong, though, having a print function is also important.

Well, if you could print, you'd be able to print to a PDF. That would be a form of exporting text. Then you could copy and past from larger blocks of text.

Is that still not what you want?

That'd be one way sure. I'll take whatever I can get. But I'd assume a simple, non-formatted text export would be simpler than full print functionality which seems to be indefinitely delayed.

Heck if I could simply copy/paste from the player view window I'd be happier. As of now, the only way I can see to repurpose the info I've typed into RW is to laboriously copy paste each and every field into a separate document.

Mostly hoping I've been overlooking some functionality. I've spent a lot of effort inputting info on a new game world with no good way to disseminate it without players being in the same room with me and staring at a computer screen. That is, unless I'm missing something.

Screenshot + OCR?

To enter data, I tend to copy/paste in, then CTRL-ENTER to break it into snippets.

Reversing that process, you could merge snippets (CTRL-M) back together again, copy them to a word processor and print. Just don't save after you've re-merged those fields....

Yes. Tedious.

What I'd like to be able to do to go from Realm Works to a desktop publishing system is to define templates for how data is transformed from Topics/Articles and Snippets to the text you'll import elsewhere. This lets you repeat (and hopefully automate) the steps needed as you make changes in Realm Works.

I doubt LWD will go that far, though, and definitely not in any sort of short term. What I think is more likely is dumping each Topic/Article as either text or RTF. If the formatting is well defined, you could then bring it into Word (or whatever) and adjust it for import into your DTP system.

The more work it takes to take data out of Realm Works and into traditional products, the less publishers will want to use it as part of their workflow. That relegates Realm Works to "yet another destination format" rather than potentially being the central organizing application for their game world. Even worse for LWD, it's a destination format that takes a lot of work to go from even the sources for a traditional published work to something sellable in the envisioned RW marketplace.

Is any of this how they envisioned us using Realm Works? Definitely not primarily, and perhaps not at all. Just look what happens when there's some possibilities, though. :)

Thanks! It's not ideal, but that's the smoothest option I've heard yet.

That is unless they thought copy/paste wasn't essential. (Sorry, couldn't help myself).
